“Treatable” vs “Curable”

Hi,

Recently diagnosed with BC. Don’t know much about it yet (seeing Oncologist tomorrow) but will be having chemo and then surgery.

Currently fixating on the fact I was told it was “treatable” and wondering why they didn’t say “curable”. Any ideas?

  • Having just had a mastectomy 4 weeks ago and getting my pathology results today ... I would say that they didn't know the full extent of my cancer at the time of the original diagnosis and then the surgery. Today, my surgeon said that the surgery had removed all of the cancer and I am now to start on AI's. From my reading, I think that treatment for breast cancer will be successful for a lot of people, and the risk of recurrence gets less as time goes on. Recurrence, unfortunately, can happen even many years after treatment, so no one can say with certainty that any of us are definitely cured.

  • Hi there, I was told it was very treatable when diagnosed initially & when I asked them what my prognosis/stage was they said that they don’t give this info until after your surgery.

I was recommended to have chemo after surgery & at this point they said that that chemo was being given with “curative” intent to lower the risk of recurrence.  I guess, as Squirrelmama says, treatment gets rid of the cancer but the risk of recurrence does sit in the background for all of us to some degree so we can never be officially “cured”. This did freak me out at first but I am getting used to this now slowly but surely & you will too.  Best of luck with the rest of your treatment xxx

  • Hi, my chemo plan/consent form says that the intended benefit of treatment is curative (but there are no guarantees of outcome). I think the term treatable means there are options, rather than just letting nature take its course. The term “in remission” is probably more accurate, which may mean permanent remission = cure. That’s my understanding anyway!

  • I wa diagnosed over 9 years ago and was told I was treatable, but wouldn’t be cured since I was already stage 4.  I’ve been on the same treatment since that time and still going strong.  Don’t read too much into their comments until you have all of the details.  Wishing you healing vibes and a peaceful mind x

  • I had a lumpectomy 25years ago for bc, all lymph nodes removed followed by radiography, unfortunately in October i was diagnosed with a recurrent aggressive, under went full mastectomy now on hormone therapy. Have put lt down to bad luck.

    wishing you all the best.
