I am about 5 weeks post mastectomy and have been drained twice. I got an infection and had a hole put at the end of my surgical sight to allow it to free drain (about 2 weeks ago), everything has been fine since but I have started to develop a seroma even with the hole still present. I did think my skin had started to take to my chest wall and maybe this is preventing it coming out as it was doing before. Has anyone had anything similar happen? I am seeing surgeon Friday !

  • Hi, I had a seroma which my surgeon was reluctant to drain and felt it was better to give it time. it settled a little eventually, but I still have some discomfort and swelling. Definitely worth getting your surgeon to check on Friday,  best wishes

  • Hi, I'm three weeks post mastectomy, I've got an awful seroma. I'm seeing the seroma nurse on Monday. I'm really not managing it. My surgeon showed me how to masage and pump my under arm (couldn't do it on myself).

The Seroma nurse on the phone mentioned binding?

    1. I'm sort of hanging on till Monday. Seems no quick way of resolving it. (If anyone has tips that would help)

Wishing you all the best with it, I share your pain.

  • Hi EwyBear  I am 5 weeks post breast surgery.  I have seroma I have been drained 5 times and I’m sure it will be drained again on Monday.  I don’t know why they have left you with a hole to drain itself as I would have thought you could get an infection.  They told me seroma and draining is common but eventually settles.  Best wishes xxx

  • I have since been put in a PICO dressing (an air pump type thing!) which has worked wonders in knitting my hole back together and keeping on mastectomy sight flat. So positive news all round for me, now awaiting my sarcoma appointment Monday to discuss treatment plan.

  • Don't worry about the seroma. Only drained once (500 ml!!) and was told scarring is better the less you have done. Took several months but dissipated on its own and looking good. No infections.
