Diagnosed with secondary breast cancer in bones

Hi everyone, , haven’t been on for a while but wanted to say please if you have any concerns about your condition don’t let yourself be brushed away. 3 years after my primary diagnosis I began experiencing pain in my right ribs radiating to my back. Went to my GP who gave me a thorough examination and sent me for an X-ray which came back clear. She decided it was a muscle strain. In December after 6 months of going on about this pain even to my oncology team and my oncologist’s nurse and continually being told it was muscle strain they sent me for a bone scan which showed mets in my spine, 2 ribs and my skull. I also have a compression fracture in my spine so have to be very careful what I do. If they had taken me seriously in the beginning I would have been 6 months further on in my treatment and perhaps it would not have spread so much. I’ve since discovered that the first sign of bone mets is pain so I’ve no idea why they chose to ignore it!

Please, please anything at all that you are worried about do not let your team shrug you off. Hope you don’t mind me posting this but if it helps even one person it’s worth it.

Sending my best wishes to everyone! x

  • Hello Bramble22. I’m so sorry to hear it’s returned.  I’m also sorry that they didn’t scan you earlier.  My journey started in 2921.  I’ve had a lot of rib pain after radiotherapy.  Just out of another surgery.  Thank you for letting “us” know to be mindful of further pain, whatever the length of time we need to shout out.  Very best wishes and hugs … xxx J

  • Hi bramble, thanks for sharing that.  Sorry to hear it’s returned.  I wish they would tell us what to look out for.   I’ve had pain under my collar bone for 4 months on and off, thought nothing of it.  Saw the oncologist about it today and am going for a bone scan.   Wishing you all the best x

  • Thanks to you both.

If you look up a lady called Jo Taylor on abcdiagnosis.co.uk or metup.org.uk or on Twitter she has info graphics on signs of secondary breast cancer to look out for.

  • Actually I’ll just post the infographics here. Mods can delete if not appropriate.

  • Thank you for this xxx J

  • Hi  , sorry to hear your news, thanks so much for posting this. I feel that recurrence and metastasis are ‘brushed under the carpet’ and simply not discussed. The only info I’ve been given (which I already knew) has been on survival rates. I’m much more concerned re recurrence and metastasis as I think these are so often not that obvious. Or in your case, not addressed, you should not have been ignored. Thanks for doing something so positive by alerting others. Love and hugs, HFxx

  • Hi   hope you are doing ok!
You are right, for some reason this subject seems not to be discussed an awful lot by health care professionals. There isn’t even a record of how many people have secondary breast cancer. Almost as though once you are diagnosed there is no hope for you. Ok it’s not yet curable but it’s treatable so treat it!! We deserve to be given just as good care as when we present with our primary diagnosis.

As I mentioned before Jo Taylor is actively trying to have metastatic breast cancer brought to the fore.

Perhaps you guys on here could spread the infographics on any other forums you may be on. If our oncologists are not going to make us aware of the signs of metastasis then we should do it ourselves.

  • Sorry to hear this   hope treatment now getting started . Thanks for spreading the word

    take care xx

  • Hi  I remember you from treatment days. Sorry to hear your news. Cancer is real and don’t think any of us realised the continued worry we would experience after our treatment. Do hope now you are getting the best care you can. My thoughts are with you And thanks for posting this info as it’s never clear what we have to look out for. They just say be symptom aware!!

  • Thank you  , yes we emailed for a while through lockdown. Our granddaughter was born while we were in touch…she is two in a few weeks!! I’m hoping now that they’ve started treatment I’ll get a few more years to spend with her.

Hope you are continuing to do well. x
