I understand from several sources that cancer loves sugar, so since finishing surgery, chemo and radiotherapy for triple-negative breast chancer last year, I’ve tried really hard to give it up. I just can’t seem to give up chocolate and get huge cravings in the evenings that I can’t ignore. I know how bad this is for me, to say nothing of my weight, but I just can’t quit.
is there anyone out there who had the same problem, but managed to beat it, please?
Hi Katiecat13
While it's definitely a good idea to cut down on the amount of sugar in our diet, you might want to read the following from Cancer Research UK before trying to give up all your treats that contain sugar:
"It is a common myth that sugar can cause cancer cells to grow and spread. All the cells in our bodies - including cancer cells - use sugar for energy. Because cancer cells usually grow faster than healthy cells, they have a particularly high demand for sugar. But there is no good evidence that eating sugary foods directly causes cancer or makes it worse."
So I take this to mean that the occasional sweet treat won't do you, or me, any harm and no, I haven't cut all sugar out of my diet.

I think Ive also read that if there is no (or not much ) sugar to feed on, then the cancer will turn to other sources of consumed energy instead. I’m sure that Liz O’Riordan (breast cancer surgeon and BC survivor) has written and tweeted about this. That said, it’s a good thing reducing refined sugar intake, so good for you!!
Hi Katiecat13 I’m type 2 diabetic so I am careful with sugar intake ..well most of the time
I was told to limit intake by looking at all my food types and limit to 5% in 100gm once you start looking it’s shocking how high some things are .
There are lots of things that are low in sugar but can still give you the fix you’re looking for . I keep small treats in fridge . Hope you can retain your sweet tooth
I agree with the above posts, it’s refined sugar that is not particularly good for any of us; but yes, all foods turn into what the cells in our bodies need to function, including what our liver turns into a specific type of sugar that cells need for energy.
so while cutting down on refined sugar is a healthy way to live (and will please your dentist) it will do nothing to stop cancer growing!
I think this myth has grown from the fact that PET scans use a type of radio-marked sugar prior to the scan, which cancer takes up rapidly so it can be seen.
The best diet is a healthy varied one with plenty of vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts with proteins from eggs, fish, meat as needed too.

I can't talk about sugar, I'm fixed on it, weight is crazy, blood sugars crazy high.... yet I can't get the willpower and dedication together to take a grip and cut down (life is stressful, mum moans - sugar is my comfort).
I do need to get a grip - sometime soon I will.
What I wanted to say though was in reply to you moomy ..... you said....
'that the PET scans use a type of radio=marked sugar prior to the scan, which cancer takes up rapidly so it can be seen'
My thoughts from this, wouldn't it be good if the Professors, the Doctors, the Scientists .... could find something that killed cancer - that they could injection into the body like this with the PET scan and the cancer rapidly sucks it all up and booooom it's gone - this seems so do-able - one day soon I hope and pray
Sounds weird but works for me - fat free greek yoghurt with the insides of a passion fruit mixed in - I find it’s sweet enough to hit that sugar spot and I try to fantasise that it’s cheesecake - I’m guessing it’s not dark chocolate you are craving but the full on creamy sugary type….
