Smelly armpit

I had surgery for small low grade tumour on right breast 3 months ago. Then 5 sessions of radiotherapy which finished on 20 December. So 5 weeks after radio has ended  I still have a bad smell from my right armpit.  Even after washing the smell is still there. Should I be worried? Is this normal?

  • Hi, I had the most awful smell during and after my radiotherapy, 15 sessions, no amount of washing etc helped. I was told it was down to surgery & then radiotherapy disrupting the glands in my armpit. (lymph node removal & mastectomy)

It's so horrible & feel for you, the smell did go but it took a while. Hope yours rights itself too.

    Best wishes x

  • Thank you for your reply. That is reassuring.  X

Thanks for sharing this info, l think l may have the same problem at the moment post surgery 2 weeks after lumpectomy & 2 nodes removed .  Good to know that it may not be permanent Flushed x

  • I’m taking letrozole after a lymph node removal and mammoplastomy, so I put my stinking down to that - I smell like a teenager! I thought it was to do with hormones but glad it’s not just me!!

  • I had a smelly armpit after surgery, it went after a few weeks thankfully.  Washing didn’t really get rid of it.

Hi all, thanks for sharing. It is the same for me after my first operation. So, it seems that it is normal then.

I will have another operation next week. Hopefully the smell does not get worst.

  • It’s common to get changes in your skin flora in cancer treatment. Cleaning with something like dilute Milton once a day and using spray deodorant for a week or two might just sort it out for you x
