Had a mastectomy last April and am on Letrozole.   Can anyone tell me if joint pain I am experiencing in my fingers, knees and ankles can be related to medication or is it just my luck that having had breast cancer I now also have arthritis?     Was going to ask doctor but don't know if medication reaction is feasible explanation.

  • Hi 2nd time around - I am also on Letrozole and have the same issue although with exercise it does decrease.  I have joint pain in my ankes and knees mainly although other joints sometimes get affected.  I have been told that it disappears after a period of time but I don't know how long this time is.

  • Hi, sorry you're experiencing joint pain, but this is a possible side effect of letrozole. As I understand it, letrozole blocks oestrogen, and oestrogen is basically the lubricant for our bones, so joints can get painful. Regular exercise, like walking, can help. I find I am much less sore if I’ve done a decent step count.  Best wishes

  • Hi

I started  on Letrozole in August and have bone ache (Mainly lower limb) every day now. However, just had the results back from the DEXTA scan and apparently have osteoporosis so think this may aggravate the aches?! My oncologist has also said that it may get better Thinking, hope yours x

  • Joint pain is one of the main side effects of aromatase inhibiters. I had sore feet when I sat for too long or when waking but it soon wore off with activity. I also developed sever wrist pain a few months after taking exemestane and it lasted about 6 months and then disappeared.

Hopefully your joint pain will also ease in time.

  • Hi  , I had mild osteoporosis before bc so after 3 years on Letrozole my team advised a swap to Tamoxifen which is kinder to bones. I was only on that for 5 years, being deemed low risk for recurrence. Might be worth you asking your team?
