Hair Regrowth

So recently my hair regrowth has really bothered me. I finished intravenous chemotherapy back in August and my hair has been re-growing. My long term hormone therapy and cancer growth inhibitors effect hair regrowth I know, but I used to have long brown hair and now my hair is still so short and coming through so grey. Don't get me wrong, I am glad to have hair again, but when I look in the mirror I don't feel attractive, or confident. Even though I have some hair, I still don't feel like I'm looking at me. I think I over-estimated how long it takes to really recover, emotionally as well as physically.

I'm sure others have felt like this before, any words of wisdom on how to re-gain some self-confidence?

  • It took a while for my hair to grow back after chemo. Initially it was a kind of tabby cat colour very fine and downy but almost translucent.. then it became very curly and fluffy. Later on it regained its original colours and curls. I was a bit baffled by the changes but think it’s quite normal.

  • I’m happy with my regrowth and short hair looks ok on me but it isn’t “me” and it’s definitely accelerated my greying… My lack of brows and stubby lashes don’t help - I’ve decided to concentrate oLipsthe things I can do - my skin is looking fairly good considering so I’m putting more time into foundation/blusher and bring more adventurous with lipstick (I’ve also had a mastectomy and am recoveLipsng from radio and my skin is too sore for even a softie so I feel very self conscious even though I know this stage is very temporary - having people focus on my mouth Lips helps with that).  Try picking out something you do feel good about - ankles in lovely shoes, nails painted, showing off your knees - whatever it may be… try one small thing and build up… I also bought what I think is a particularly fetching cap last week which suits short hair and I’d not have worn before… there isn’t an easy answer I’m sorry to say - take care and I hope you feel more like you soon. Not sure how the emojis work on this - you put one in and text disappears all over the place!

  • Hello Labradorlover, that’s a lovely and positive reply. Wishing you a speedy recovery from the soreness from the radiotherapy!

  • Thanks. That's a really helpful response. I'll work on that, thank you. Sending you well wishes and hopes for a swift recovery.

  • It does take time to accept the new you and plenty of patience whilst hair regrows. It takes 18 months-2 years post chemo to get to bob length. Meanwhile there is time to explore hairstyles you may not have considered before, either with your own hair or experimenting with wigs. Many women choose to wear a wig for a year or more after chemo finishes, and if you feel thats for you, go with it. It just requires a but of tapering in the back and a wig grip band for success.

But try to find the things you did that make you feel like you and throw yourself in to that. Maybe its exercise, craft, work, something else. As you are able, try to do some of those things. And maybe try something new too?

The look good feel better courses are fabulous if you have not yet tried those. Really helpful make up tips on there, especially. x
