Hi everyone, happy new year to you all.
I received an urgent referral for suspected breast cancer on the 23rd Dec. Currently waiting for scans etc. I was told to expect a delay in my local area. Hoping to hear something this week.
I'm 35 and noticed my right breast started to look and feel a little heavier in august. But I decided to wait and see if it was linked to my cycle.. Sept & Oct I was in the middle of moving house, but in November after the move I realized after taking my shirt off how different my right breast looked to the left, it was drooping low like I had breast fed 3 babies - I’ve never had kids. It was noticeably bigger and it felt like I had a heavy weight behind my nipple. The other really big change was my areola was so much bigger than it’s ever been and twice the size of my left. That's what really caught my attention that something wasn't right.
I think I put off going to the GP because I didn’t want to seem like I was overreacting initially. Finally in December it was getting worse and I started feeling a weird pain, i saw the word pain loosely. It's not anything cyclical breast pain. It’s this dull weird feeling, like fullness and weight, I also feel like a warm electric or fizzing sensation deep in my breast sometimes. My nipple is also almost always pointing downwards like a weight is pushing the last 1/3 of my breast downwards while my left is still perky. I've also noticed in the last 10 days part of my areola looks like its being pulled but i'm not sure if that's because the areola has grown SO much in size. It looks so odd to me. I do have thickening, and after having a good poke around, there are some lumpy hard masses in addition to the thickening from what I can feel.
All I can say is, something feels very wrong. I can’t explain the feeling, my right breast feels very strange. I probably waited too long to get it checked but because I’ve had the mirena for 14 years I wanted to make sure it was not cyclical and it was only happening to one breast. I've had like 8 cycles and my breast symptoms consistently stay the same and have been slowly getting worse. I have also been extremely fatigued and have had no appetite since sept - I eat probably once a day and that’s it. I do have other chronic conditions so I could find an explanation for most things but not the breast symptoms.
I don’t know if I’m allowed to ask if anyone has had similar experience? Or if there’s been an experience of a benign condition with similar symptoms?
I know no one here is a doctor so i'm not actually looking for medical advice, but when trying to understand my symptoms since they are not the normal lump in the boob, I just feel a little lost at sea. 2.5 weeks of waiting so far, and I actually feel much calmer. I know what will be, will be. But i am very very new to the process. My dad died suddenly of pancreatic cancer and macmillan were great during that a few years ago so wanted to check out the website.
Thank you for reading my novel
Morning.....This is just to say you have done the right thing in seeing your doctor about these changes in your breast. Whatever the outcome of further investigations, you are not wasting anyone's time. Early detection of bc ususally results in a successful outcome. I was much older but I had no visible symptoms apart from some skin puckering. A routine mammogram found the tumour which fortunately was treated 7 years ago and hasn't yet returned.
I hope you don't have to wait too long for the next stage of scans and their results. Waiting is the hardest part.....once you have results you can take control of your future treatments. Hopefully it's just a benign infection but if not, bc treatment really is very successful if started in good time. It won't always be pleasant but time passes quickly and many patients stay clear of cancer for many years.
Keep in touch on these threads. The Awake thread is a good one to post general questions or to rant or cry or just laugh and chat. All necessary at this very difficult time.
Take of yourself.
Love Karen
Hi yes similar experience though I did feel an area of thickened tissue (not a defined lump) - it didn’t show on a mammogram but I was eventually diagnosed with lobular breast cancer after a long delay having been told it was something benign. I wish I had insisted at the time that they tell me what benign condition it was it could be as I only saw the scanning staff - when I was properly examined a few months later they diagnosed it very fast.
Thank you Karen. I have several chronic conditions that have been difficult to diagnose and manage and i've had some really terrible experiences with doctors lol not all bad but it's made me gun shy to get help. Thank you for the kindness in your message and your encouragement x
Good morning. I don't know if I feel a defined lump or just a more concentrated area of thickness lol The boob looks visual enough i think for them to take it seriously? I have had a 7 year journey of a chronic sickness and it's always me having to push to get the scans or help I need, so i hope this isn't the same because i'm tired. I hope that due to the fact I waited with the changes now coming into the 6th month and it's gradually getting worse they will take it seriously. How did they eventually diagnose you? Did they not do an US when you went? From what I hear in my area my BC clinic is very very good but I will insist on a proper examination x
The US was done with the mammogram and showed thickened tissue which they explained away as scar tissue even though hadn’t had an accident or any impact. I was diagnosed after a physical examination where they took a biopsy and sent me straight for blood tests and told me they could not rule anything out. The biopsy was confirmed a week later. I do hope you get the answers you need and that there is an innocent explanation but if it is BC you have come to the right place with all kinds of experiences to share.
That’s good to know. I had bloods done last week and there’s no sign of infection which makes me wonder what’s going on. The wait continues
