Hi all,
I’m now 44 and my periods stopped last February/March when I started chemo and haven’t returned. I’ve been on Letrozole and Zoladex since August so am assuming they won’t return given expected early menopause from the hormone treatment - am I right to assume that? I’ve been fortunate in not experiencing any major menopause symptoms, I think because it was gradual given loss of periods through chemo, but just wanted to sense check. Should I ask my doctors? Also not sure if I should still use birth control (definitely don’t want to risk more children but that seems highly unlikely!)
thanks!
Zoladex stops your ovaries working so no chance of getting pregnant - but probably worth checking just in case!
I was also mid-40s starting zoladex and exemestane and had quite an intense menopause, going from very regular periods to nothing at all and I got my first zoladex during chemo which I think intensified everything.
I asked if my periods were likely to return once I finished hormone therapy, currently after 5 years. The oncologist thought this was extremely unlikely. When I pressed the point, because there's no way I'm going through menopause twice, she said that my ovaries have been battered by chemo at an age when things were starting to slow anyway, and then will be switched off for 5 years. The chances of them firing back up when I'm around 50 is virtually non existent.
Hopefully that's what you wanted to hear!
