Hi, I have just been diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and will have surgery early next year and am taking Letrozole in the meantime. I am travelling overseas in a couple of days for an extended time visiting family. I booked travel insurance months ago, which appears to have good medical coverage. I have enough medication to last my entire trip, so am not anticipating needing any medical care when I’m abroad. Does anyone know if I am required to tell my insurers of this diagnosis before I travel?
Hi Jules B and a very warm welcome to the online community
The quick answer to your question about whether you need to tell your insurers of your diagnosis before travelling is almost certainly yes.
I'd recommend that you look at the terms and conditions of your policy, which will tell you what you need to do if between taking out the insurance and going on holiday you are diagnosed with an illness.
I hope you have a lovely holiday

Yes you are I’m afraid. It may make absolutely no difference to your cover, I have my insurance with Barclays and they were great, but if you don’t tell them you could find yourself abroad with zero insurance cover as keeping it to yourself may invalidate your policy. Have a fantastic break x
Just to add Jules B , if your travel insurers now decline to insure you, or want to increase the premium by a lot, then do join us over in the travel insurance group where you'll find plenty of recommendations for insurers who will cover people who have a cancer diagnosis.

So, called the company. What a disaster, they are speaking to the underwriters, and it looks like they are going to decline cover. I leave on Boxing Day, and it takes them 72 hours to decide if I’m covered, which will be after I leave. I’m not even sure if they are going to refund the premium. Totally unsympathetic experience with the call handler!
That puts you in a very difficult position Jules B as you can't go away without travel insurance but you say you won't know if you're covered until you've gone, by which time it'll be too late to buy alternative cover if they won't insure you as I don't think you can buy travel insurance once you've left the country.
It might be a good idea to speak to the financial advisers at Macmillan straight away. They won't be able to advise you which company you could buy travel insurance from but they should be able to advise you on the best course of action to take. It's free to call them on 0808 808 0000 and they're available today up to 6pm.

Hi, what a tough situation to be in! My suggestion is to look up and call ‘Insurancewith’ as they’ve been incredibly helpful to daughter who travels for work and pleasure and has long lasting problems as a result of her long history (it’s in my profile but it’s a long read!)
Usually useful to phone companies as they can often suggest more on the phone and you can discuss your requirements easier.
Really hope you can get something sorted in time
Hugs xxx
