Recovery after Neratinib, Anastrozole and Letrozole

I coped well with surgery, radiotherapy and Herceptin for breast cancer but things went drastically downhill during a year taking Neratinib and then 3 years on Anastrozole (for 2) and Letrozole for another 10 months or so. After much research and soul searching and discussion with professionals, I stopped taking the Letrozole 6 weeks ago. I am 70 next year.

I experienced extreme incontinence with Neratinib and continuing diarrhoea and bladder weakness throughout the treatment followed by a horrible selection of the worst side effects from the hormone suppressants: joint and muscle pain, bowel/bladder issues, vaginal soreness, extreme tiredness and lethargy; foggy brain, memory loss, hair thinning, bloating and more. My side effects didn't improve with time but got worse.

However, what I am struggling with now is recovery! Although I feel SO much better nevertheless I still  struggle with my bowels - constipation, diarrhoea and pregnancy-like bloating, plus wind - and I've started to wonder if the Neratinib especially has disturbed the normal rhythm of my body? A recent bowel cancer test was negative.

Anyone got any ideas for how I might 'reset' my body? I know I'm older now but I'm only 69. Do I just need to convalesce and rest my hormonal challenged and physically battered body!?!?

There is so much more I could say but not now. Generally, I'm a happy woman who has been treated splendidly by the NHS, has a good prognosis and is looking forward to the future. But without all the toilet stops and incontinence pads!!

Hi there! Love the chat and your super positive attitude! How I can relate to some of it, particularly for me the diarrhoea and ‘the wind’! I’ve only been on Letrozole for a few weeks and take them with evening meal so no real effects to speak of but oncologist did say tolerate for at least 4 months before reporting anything you’re struggling with. My issues stem from chemo way back in the summer and I LIVE for my toilet and buy reams of loo paper AND vaseline for my sore bits! Like you I bless the NHS and am truly grateful for all the treatment/discussions and the fab MacMillan staff for their consistent help. I’m 68…still love EMIMEN (much to my husbands distain)!! BWxxx

  • I started drinking Kefir every day, which has made a big difference to how my tummy feels. I have tried pill form probiotics but they don't seem to be as good as drinking a good quality Kefir drink.

  • Thank you for this. I rushed out and bought some and it certainly seems to be calming things down.

  • Thanks for reply. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. I'm drinking kefir as suggested by someone else and it seems to be calming this down so maybe could work for you, too? And thanks for reminding me about Vaseline!! Good luck with your treatment and have a lovely Christmas holiday.

  • Did it help with bloating and wind? You got to eat something, a lot of things seem to cause it now. Open mouth
