Hi all. I had a right mastectomy August and just finished my chemo with Radiotherapy due in January. I shaved my hair after my 2nd cycle as it was falling out but it seemed to be playing me for a fool as it then stopped it was better to do it though as it was thinning in places so gave me one less thing to worry about. My question now is can anyone recommend a supplement or magical potion to help the regrowth? I don’t mind it being short even though it’s the first time in my life I’ve had short hair; but it was already quite fine so I’d like to do as much as possible to get it back healthy. Thanks a mill
Dawn
Hi @boredsilly I used Nioxin hair shampoo and conditioner it was recommended by my hairdresser . I finished chemo end of Dec2919 started on Herceptin infusions three weeks later . Was shielded from March 2020 I came out in the July needing a haircut . It came back with chemo curls and quite thick ( hav3 always had thick hair . Since then I get it trimmed every 4 weeks and keep it short think I got lazy
There is not really a magic treatment for hair regrowth, though there are plenty of products that will leave you with a much lighter pocket! Initially I used cetaphil moisturing lotion on my head or simple face wash. I still use faith in nature unscented shampoo and conditioner after 8 months. Hair starts to grow at 4-8 weeks after chemo and grows at half speed for about a year and then it picks up. It takes about 2 years from the last chemo to get to a short bob. I was advised to cut a wedge in to the back of my hair as the top grows down, to get to a bob. At almost 10 months, my hair is about 10cm long. I am not cutting the top as the ends are not split. I am still wearing my wig as I feel more me with longer hair, though I must admit I ditch it in favour of the bobble hat on these icy days!!
If you do get any patchy hair loss you can try the 5% minoxidil from Costco - with a dropper, applied sparsely. The mousse is hard to apply so would avoid that. You have to apply it every day for 4 months to see if it works for you. I think it works for about 80 percent of women with hair loss. My hair is thinning at the temples, on my crown and parting line due to anastrazole. I don't think anyone other than me would notice it tbh, and as hair is getting longer, it really does not show now.
Your hair will come back, it just takes time. xx
