Can the lymph node biopsy be done prior to mastectomy & reconstruction or is it always done at the same time?
Thank you,
Kx
Hi, perhaps this link to ask a nurse might help as I noticed you've not had any responses yet. Best wishes
Hi Karilu
Just in case you haven't asked the nurse yet, I would presume that it may not be the best option as this would mean 2 operations. My lymph nodes were removed via the same excision during my lumpectomy and were then tested to see if they contained any cancer cells. My guess would be that this is the best way of doing it anyway as they will have more of an idea how much cancer is in your breast and that the lymph nodes are the 'final' check to see if there's any spread. I have personally never heard of anyone having their lymph nodes removed prior.
Hope this helps and best wishes, Lesley
Thanks Lesley appreciate you taking the time to answer, Kxo
Thank you we saw the surgeon and nurses yesterday.
It happens at the same time - they have to identify the lymph nodes at surgery. They use a special dye to do this. If your lymph nodes are not visible on an ultrasound, they can't sample them prior to surgery. You get the results of your surgery and lymph nodes usually 2-3 weeks or so after your operation. Good luck for your surgery and wishung you a speedy recovery.
