Hi, I am nearly two weeks post 15 sessions of whole breast and then 5 boost and am developing more stiffness in my shoulder and upper arm. I am doing the exercises recommended post operation. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced similar and if so, what was recommended please?

Hi Hilfe22 welcome to the forum. It can be an after effect of having to lie with your arm in the same position during all those sessions and maybe a bit stiff and needs loosened up. Keep doing those exercises and if it doesn't start to ease off in another couple of weeks, maybe ask the GP to get you seen  by a physio who could maybe recommend  different exercises for you.

  • The side effects from radiotherapy peak at 2 weeks so I guess you are experiencing the worst of the inflammation from the radiotherapy. There are exercises you can do - its recommended to do something every day for 18 months to maintain mobility of your chest wall and shoulder. There are you tube videos on what to do to keep things going and moving well. I am about 5 months out from radiotherapy and am much less stiff but I do notice those days when I have skipped/ forgotten to stretch out my chest wall and shoulder. It does get better - stick with the exercises and it will improve

  • Thank you, that's reassuring.

Oh how I can relate to you! I finished 15 RT in Sept and my breast bones and under my left (mastectomy) arm are so stiff! I try to stretch every morning/night and use my left arm more than my right. I massage the area and try to avoid sleeping on that side. Breast nurse said exercise daily..can’t do anything but try to keep fit!

  • Thanks. Hopefully the exercises will help us both.

  • In the early days, it feels like it will never be OK again, but with time you will see a slow but steady improvement. Keep going and  it will get much better xx

  • Thanks again. I’ll keep doing the exercises. Hope you are ok.
