Evening all…..

im so confused at the minute.
when I was 19 I took out an insurance policy with my first mortgage, as it had critical illness cover at a really good price I kept it on for all of these years just in case….. well here I am aged 46 with a new diagnosis of breast cancer which has spread to my lymph nodes (confirmed by biopsy)

when I dug out my policy to see if I am entitled to claim the policy states  ‘a malignant tumour characterised by the uncontrolled growth and of malignant cells and invasion of tissue but the following are excluded

  • all tumours which are histologically described as pre-malignant, as non invasive or as a cancer in situ.

I received the histology result from my surgeon which states:

‘ there is ductal carcinoma in situ’

conclusion

left breast malignant grade 2 invasive ductal carcinoma with left axilla metastatic carcinoma

my questions are:

  1. Are insurers like to pay out with this diagnosis?
  2. how can it be in situ if it has spread?
  3. has anyone had any problems claiming for a similar days diagnosis

many thanks for taking the time to read and hopefully reply.

  • Hi, I had grade 2 invasive ductal spread to lymph nodes but also dcis in the same breast. Maybe this is whatvis meant by your histology results.

I think they will pay out with your diagnosis x

  • Hi Jo,

you might find the wording is out of date and they’ve updated it in recent years. My critical illness said the same but I called them and arranged an interview over the phone. After, I sent them the written confirmation of my diagnosis (grade 3 invasive ductal carcinoma) and had confirmation within 2 weeks they were paying out.
So my advice is give them a call and try! In my experience (I work for an IFA) most companies are the same!

  • Hi Mel,

    thanks, I’ll give them a call. X

  • Hi Shell, thanks for this….. I can’t face the argument with them but will call them on Monday.

  • I found them very easy to deal with as I wasn’t expecting it to pay out. The claims line are usually a bit nicer due to your circumstances so hopefully it won’t be a battle! Good luck!

  • Hi Jo

i am in a similar situation, policy on my mortgage, in just my name. I was diagnosed 14/2, had surgery to find it had spread to lymph node, further surgery and now waiting decision on treatment.

My question is did they pay out and how long ? GP has forwarded information on and waiting for consultant to. I began my claim end of June. Ironically my mortgage has just over 2 years left on it.

I have chased up with a phone call to consultant secretary yesterday. I’ve looked at wording and compared has well

    Thanks

    Anne

  • Good morning.

sorry to hear what you are going through but even though it feels dark at times, there is light at the end of the tunnel….. I have now finished all treatment and I am going back to work soon.

the insurance were great. They received the info from my surgeon and then agreed to pay out. The actual pay out took about 4 weeks but there was no quibbling.

hope it is the same for you! Good luck! Xx

  • Thank you

i wish I had chased the surgeon more, I had mentioned it to him and he said I would qualify.

They’ve been on strike and he’s had a weeks leave in between. Will call again next week.

It would be so helpful and didn’t realise I was covered till a friend looked into it

    Thank you x

  • Hi   I only had to scan them my letter from the hospital which confirmed my diagnosis and they paid out on that. I didn’t have to get my consultant involved at all. They paid mine within a couple of weeks. Might be worth checking if the company will accept the same so you don’t have to wait for your consultant

    good luck!

  • Hi

Thank you. I am with the Halifax under writers Scottish Widows. They requested GP and Consultant confirmation along with medical board.

Ironically the consultant said he would sign it off straight away but not there waiting on him not the GP.

    Fingers crossed thank you x
