I was just wondering about any experiences had with hair growth.

I have completed 5 and half months of chemo and am just about to complete 3wks of radiotherapy. I am also on tamoxifen.

Before my chemo I got my daughter to cut my hair shorter .then as it started to fall out we cut it shorter and shorter over a week or so until finally we cut it with my husbands hair clippers to a number 3. This seemed to help with the hair loss and I never completely lost it all. Now....it has grown to a couple of inches in lengh and soft(I use Johnson baby shampoo and only wash it couple times a week).

Before cancer my hair was already thinning on top at the front.....and I was wondering if I clipper it back again now to a shorter lengh....would this help my hair to grow back thicker?  Or should I worry that if I cut it will it not come back as good as it is now.

  • HI there.  Hair is such a pain - I finished my treatement 18 minths ago and lost all my hair.  It grew back really nicely but now after 18 months on Anastrozole, I am also thinning at the front.  Very annoying!

I am thinking of asking a good hairdresser, I am sure they have seen it all.

    Good luck

  • I don't think cutting it makes any difference to thickness really - its a hairdressing myth! But if tidying it up makes you feel better you should do that. I would just let it grow if you can get away with it. I have been advised not to colour mine until its at least 4 inches long. I am at about 3 inches after 8 months. I saw a hairdresser at a wig shop who advised me to cut the back of mine shorter whilst waiting for the top to gain enough length to have some weight to it. And then trim the longer bits until I get a style. She also advised me how to deal with the thinning front, temples and crown from my anastrozole. She suggested parting it and then combing it over the thinner areas. I can see already how that is beginning to work over my temples. My crown will be fine too once I have another couple of inches of length. Really one has to be taller than me to see the bald patch.I think it will all be really easy to cover as my hair grows and I was very reassured by the hairdressing specialist. I think it would take about 24 months to get to a short bob length from when I finished chemo, but think it will be very respectable, complete with thinner areas well covered and disguised by 12 months.

  • i’m still having chemo (with a cold cap)but the new white stuff is starting to come through while I still have done long straggly dark bits -which I got trimmed today to keep it neat under my wig  I kind of like having a fringe or part of one Left fir hats/caps.  I went and chatted to a hairdresser and she suggested tidying it up for now and then thinking again when I’ve finished chemo (I’m still losing hair as well as growing fluff) and maybe having a buzz cut to an inch as the new growth looks to be curly   She said there’s no right or wrong just what suits you st the time as it starts to regrow.   I

  • She did it looks thicker when it’s trimmed but it isn’t actually any thicker if that makes sense.

  • Thankyou. I am going to let mine grow a bit more and then tidy it with a long buzz cut if needed. It is very soft and fluffy too.

    Yours looks lovely.

Good luck with the rest of your treatment.  X

  • Hi, I shaved mine off before chemo and raised over 5 grand for charity, mine is now starting to grow back....I've been rubbing body shop coconut hair oil into my scalp and hair twice a day and feel like its helped. It was recommended to me by a friend who's Mum swore by it. Xx
