Hello. Did the foot and knee pain start after chemotherapy ended. I've had pain in my legs for 8 months now after chemotherapy. Sometimes it's hard to walk. The doctors tell me it's a side effect of chemotherapy and prescribe painkillers, but they don't help. I do not know what to do?

  • Hi

I'm sorry that all I can offer you is empathy for your foot and knee pain.  I didn't need chemo. so I don't know about the side effects, but as I see your post hasn't any answers as yet, I'm replying to 'bump' it back up and hope someone with experience can give you so more information.

    Kindest wishes, Lesley

  • I can sympathise with you because the main pains I had after chemo were in my legs.

However I was referreed to a neuro surgeon. He told me that he sees lots of post chemo patients. I am wondering if you have something similar. I had severe nerve damage in my feet but the leg pain was actually caused by compression of the sciatic nerve at L4/L5. He said that the chemo had probably accelerated a problem with my vertebrae I would have developed in future. It had caused the vertebrae to press on the nerve and the pain occurs in the leg or down the buttocks. I often could only walk for 5 minutes. So I had an operation on my spine. The relief wasn't immediate and getting over a back op takes some months as the muscle takes time to heal but now four years on, I have no leg pain and only occasional back ache. Unfortunately the permanently damaged foot nerves can be painful at times but I was moved to six monthly checks with a neurologist who monitors all and prescribes B12, 6 and I which all help with nerve pain.

My advice now is to insist you are referred for further checks. My problem showed on a MRI scan. It was no longer a problem for oncology as typically pain that is simply a chemo se usually corrects itself within six months. Continued pain is often the result of actual damage.

I hope you have some satisfaction soon. Constant pain is totally debilitating.

    Take care. Love Karen
