Hi all ,
I am sitting by a swimming pool and looking at everyone in there swimwear. I have my surgery in a few days time and am just feeling incredibly sad that this might be the last time I can ever do this . Lots of different body shapes ,but everyone looks normal . How will I ever manage being flat on one side and a G cup on the other?Friends keep telling me I’m brave and I’ll be fine but I’m not so sure . I’m glad the cancer will be hopefully all be gone but there’s so much more to manage isn’t there . I hope this doesn’t sound trivial .
I’m just wondering if anyone further down the line has managed this ? I will be needing a prothesis. Can they be hidden in any sort of top ? Can you go in the water ? Sorry - I know others a facing much more.
Fear not Jerseygirl you will be able to swim and look normal. You should be able to get a prosthesis via the hospital, just make sure they measure you properly. Failing that try Amoena online. They can advise how to measure. Don’t get the expensive prosthesis, get the swim form. They are much cheaper and can be used for everyday. You can get them on prescription but I’m not sure how, Others may be able to help. Xx
Onwards and flatwards (don't do hills) and keep walking if you can!
Hi
My mum had pockets sewn into her bikini /swimming costumes so she could wear her prosthesis by the pool and to swim in , she’s not much of a swimmer so can’t comment on how it would be doing front crawl etc. It is very upsetting losing a breast , I luckily had an immediate implant , changed to a Diep 2 1/2 years later, so never was flat , are you having reconstruction in the future ?
Good luck with the op and enjoy your holiday
Jo x
Thank you . I will look at Amoena and ask the breast cancer nurse , when I see her after the surgery .
Thanks for the encouragement. I think needing to look normal means more to me than I expected !
Hi Jo,
Thanks for replying . Did your mum just use an ordinary bikini ? I don’t really want to swim lengths either , just cool off after lying on a bed chair !
I am going to have a reduction on the other breast but this can’t be done until all the other treatment is finished ( 6 months plus) , so worrying about how to manage in that period .
Im glad you’ve had your reconstruction now . Hope you’re pleased with the result ?
I’m mixed up about my surgery because I want the cancer gone but haven’t come to terms with loosing a breast . I’m 58.
best wishes ! X
I’m a GG and had a single mastectomy in May. I can’t have reconstruction for at least a year after radio which starts in December (currently going through chemo). I have a weighted prosthesis which I got on prescription which looks ok even with fairly tight tops and is the right weight so I’m not damaging my back walking lopsided but I’m self conscious so I will change my style over time I suspect. Mine isn’t a swim one but I’m planning on going to a specialist shop once I’m recovered and getting a swim suit and different prosthesis ready for next summer. It’s going to be part of my recovery journey - I’m not keen on swimming pools but I do like to swim in the sea and relax on the beach. People who meet me assume I had a reconstruction already as you can’t tell in normal clothes if that helps ….
Hi Labrador Lover,
Yes - that does help . Thank you .
I didn’t realize there were different sorts of prosthesis.
When you came home after surgery did you have any sort of prosthesis then or does that come later ? Also wandering is the bra that you come out of hospital with immediately post surgery , the same bra that you wear with a prosthesis or is that something you buy later . I hope you don’t mind me asking and thank you for replying when you’re in the middle of chemo .
