Hello. I'm due my first round of chemotherapy on Wednesday! I'll be having weekly sessions for 12 weeks and then every 3 weeks for 4 sessions, before surgery and then radiotherapy. I'm 33 and a single mum to a 3 and 5 year old, I'm petrified of any side effects that are going to knock me off my feet and of course getting through my first session. I understand everyone reacts different, but can anyone help with how they felt after their first couple of sessions? Thank you in advance
I hope all goes well for you. You are right when you say everyone reacts differently. I think weekly will be good for you because I suspect the dose, at any one time, will be a little less so although it will be continuous throughout the twelve weeks....it may not be so severe on your body. To answer your question...I have known people who are back at work on the second day while other's rarely manage to get out of bed and everything in between.
I know having small children won't be easy so I do hope you will have someone at short notice who you can call on to come and take over the children's routine. I think , if you haven't already, I would tell the school too. If you are sick....or even just nauseous and not eating....your children may be unsettled which could mean changes to their behaviour which their teachers can help with. I was a teacher....it was so much easier if we knew of changes in home circumstances with children and young people of any age.....Whilst you may hope to hide things from them, if you get any side effects, however mild, I doubt that they won't notice.
I know these next few weeks won't be easy for you but at least your treatment will be starting and the sooner it begins, the sooner your recovery. My own cancer was in 2015 and has stayed clear so far since treatment.
Take care. Love Karen
Thank you, I have informed preschool and primary school. Preschool have been very supportive, primary school I've had no response...
I have my mum staying and working from mine so will have someone on hand and their dad has been more supportive than I expected.
I told my consultant that I work as a house keeper and she simply replied with yea you won't be able to do that, so it's planted that little seed that I'm going to be awful with treatment!
Hi Jess, I know it’s all frightening for you as it was for me and all others on here so we do understand exactly how you are feel.
My plan sounds similar to yours.
Paclitaxel every week for 12 weeks then it’s EC every other week 4 doses like you but don’t know what chemo your having. Then it’s surgery then Radiotherapy.
Up to now I have had 3 chemo and I must admit I feel very surprised because it hasn’t effected me like I thought. I am still working from home as I feel fine. The only difference is the following day I’ve had a hot face and a couple of aches in my legs. I haven’t even taken the anti sickness they provided.
so fingers crossed you may be the same as me, I hope so anyway
This very doable and you will get through it Also the best advice I can give you is to try and stay active even going for a walk for 20 mins each day. The the main thing I think is stopping me from feeling sick is I’m trying to drink 3 and a half pints of water a day. I also have my water bottle as I have my chemo.
Have a good weekend and take care of yourself love

Thank you that's reassuring. Mine is paclitaxle and carboplaitin (just reading off the sheet!) And then ec for the last 4.
I walk the school runs, so that will be minimal exercise.
Do you mind me asking if you've started to loose any hair yet? I don't know how long this process takes?
Thank you xx
After 3 chemo Paclitaxel I still have all my hair, some has fallen out but you wouldn’t notice, it’s on the brush when I brush it of an evening. I think I will eventually lose it especially when I have the EC Chemo but I am prepared for this now I think.
don’t forget though this isn’t forever as will grow back as soon as you finish the chemo.
I know two women personally who lost all their hair but it’s all grown back and you would never know they had ever lost it.
Ask me anything and I’ll always answer you.
I’m a few weeks ahead you and hopefully answer your questions
stay strong you can do this for sure
Karen xxxxxxxx
My hair is constantly falling out as it is, so I think I'm prepared to loose it. My best friend has agreed to shave it when it gets to that stage, the thought of cleaning up hair every day seems worse than losing it at the moment! I've just been thinking positive thought's like getting rid of the dye build up and apparently it grows back curlier...
I have my induction on Tuesday so hopefully I'll have more answers then and a bit more reassurance.
Thank you for answering my questions so far, it's greatly appreciated! I hope the rest of your journey goes smoothly xxx
