Pre Diagnosis Anxiety, is there any chance it could be benign?

Hi everyone. Recently found a lump in my breast. Had a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy. Consultant told me I needed a MRI this Saturday. Said he was concerned. Got an appointment for 2 weeks time with him to discuss findings. My question is has anyone ever been through these tests and been told the lump is benign? Or something else not cancerous? I just almost want a slight bit of hope to cling onto? Thank you x

  • Hi

I think there will be people who have been through this and found that it was ok, but in all honesty, this is likely to be a small minority.  Breast cancer does show up as different cells on a scan and the surgeons will know what to look for.  I know you are looking for hope, but it's also important to be prepared that it may well be cancerous.

Having said that, breast cancer is eminently treatable these days  - I am over 5 years down the line from being diagnosed and treatment finished last month (I was oestrogen positive, so was on tablets for 5 years).  I can honestly say that the whole time, the fear was LOTS worse than the actual for me.

It is possible that when ladies find lumps in their breast that it could be a cyst.  I had a callback from my first ever mammogram when I was 51 and wasn't worried in the slightest.  I went to my follow up appointment on my own (nearly didn't bother as it was over 30 miles away and thought it was 'cause 'they didn't know my breasts' and it was just routine!).  When I saw the nurse after the biopsies her words were "there is an area of concern" and after the other nurse finding a lump before my biopsies, I knew for sure that it was cancer.  Her words were the bit that made me realise - it wasn't confirmed properly for a couple of weeks, but I did know I had cancer at that point.

As I say, hold out for a little hope, but please don't think that it's the end of everything if it is cancerous, because there are so, so many of us that have had breast cancer and happily getting on with our lives now.  I was surprised by how many people 'came out of the woodwork' after I had been diagnosed to say that they'd had breast cancer years previously.

You are at the worst period at the moment, the not knowing, then potentially waiting for treatment plan etc.  Once you know where you stand, I promise it gets a lot easier to cope with.  Huge fingers crossed that it turns out to be harmless for you, but please keep your thoughts with the fact that it is VERY treatable IF it does turn out to be cancerous.

Do keep us posted and this forum is a great place for you to be.

    Kindest wishes, Lesley
