A few general questions please

Hallo, me again, she who is resident in Germany.  I have a number of questions to which I should love some answers!  Just get told to Google it here.

1.  The pus coming from my tumour smells.  I HATE that smell.  Is there anything I can do, swollow, spray on it to stop the smell.  I wear perfume all the time but the smell conquers the perfume!  I use collidal Silver (Googled it) which helps a lot with bleeding but not with the smell.

2.  A friend in the UK has lung cancer, she gets so much help from Macmillan (which is why she told me to try and join).  She has been told not to carry heavy stuff, not iron and not to do housework.  She eveb gets a government payment so that she can hire a cleaning lady!!!!  Is there stuff I shouldn't be doing?  Went shopping yesterday, heaving stuff in and out of trolleys and car boots: felt so shattered when I got back, couldn't eat, just had to lie down.

3.  About the pus: I was telling myself it must be good - dead tumour cells coming out but now I wonder if it is dead normal cells and the tumour is doing a Putin, killing off all it can.

4.  I have to say I feel generally weary and am often short of breath, is this normal?

5.  I have never been a good sleeper, can't switch my brain off.  I take Tramadol painkillers about one a day if the pain gets too bad.  My friend sent me some of her sleeping tablets which are wonderful and work!!!!  But they say to talk to your doctor if you also take Tramadol.  Anyone know why?  Does my hair turn green?  Do my hands drop off?  Wish the leaflets would be more explicit.  And no talk to the doctor does not work here.

Cheers Brabant - grateful for any thoughts in reply.  Or should I (er can I) ask the Macmillan experts?

  • Hi Brabant

Gosh it sounds like you are having a tough time.  I had a tumour removed in May which was 20cm and one of the main symptoms was being absolutely exhausted all the time so I suspect the tiredness is down to that. I wasn’t breathless though.  I can’t really comment on other things - but I would be worried about the pus smelling being some kind of infection. I don’t think anything coming out like that should smell.

Can you make a plan to take things a bit easier? Most clothes don’t need ironing if you hang them carefully, can you do an online shop or ask a a neighbour get yours when they do their own shopping  and maybe just top up a few bits as part of a little walk, and I do housework in really small bits - not trying to do a whole room or the whole house in one go.

I do hope that you can get some good advice in Germany. I did live there briefly a long while ago and their healthcare system took really good care of me when I was very unwell and needed 10 days in hospital but I didn’t have the equivalent of a GP.

  • Thanks, Labradoelover (I have Bedlingtons - Brabant was number 3, long since over the rainbow bridge but always remembered.).  Telling me that you felt exhausted really helps!I always think I'm the only one with the problem!  My other half is very German; seems to think I am making a fuss about nothing to get off doing stuff... heigh ho.  You are quite right, shouldn't have tried to do Lidl and Rewe in one go!  Left it for 4 weeks too because I just didn't have the energy...own goal I fear.

Ger,man hospitals can be brilliant (Passau was) or dire (Deggendorf!).  It is an inbred lack of customer care I fear.

I really appreciate your answers.  Thanks so much

Cheers Brabant (Now on number 6 Beddie!)

  • Hi Brabant,

There are dressings with activated charcoal which can be good at absorbing  odour but  under the care of medical/nursing team. Any underlying infection needs to be treated. It sounds like you really need a bit of nursing care and advice. You could try emailing/ phoning macmillan nurses if there’s no one over there to help.

You really shouldn’t be having to cope with this on your own. Hope you get sorted.

    Gillie

  • Gosh that sounds good.  I went on Amazon (my place to search for everything) gulp....cost 119 Euros for a pack of ten = 330 euros a month!!!!  Can't afford that sadly.  I'll ask when next I have a blood test (10 days time) if I can get them on prescription.

I'd love to communicate with a Macmillan nurse but am I allowed as I am not in the UK?  And if allowed how does one do it?

    Cheers Brabant

  • There is an ask an expert heading at the top of this page and that gives you the option to contact a nurse.

Do they have out patient dressings clinics over there, if you could get referred maybe they could help or is there a practice nurse with your GP or equivalent. Could you be referred to a district nurse if they have community care.

Has your wound been swabbed to see if it’s growing any bugs? If there’s an infection it could be making you feel pretty rotten. It really sounds like you need some help to cope with all this.

Hope you find some help and support.

  • Nothing like that: outpatient dressings etc.  I don't mind, can do it myself.  No one has swabbed the tumour; maybe I should ask them to, good idea.  I think what I most need is information!  I can cope with anything I understand; it's not understanding that gets to me.....

Cheers Brbant and so very many thanks for your help and suggestions.  I have sent a question to the Ask an Expert nurses.

  • YEA!!!!  Tracked down some charcol dressings for a mere 30 Euros for 20!  Hurrah.

  • Answering your first question, I can say that no perfume will be able to block the smell of pus from the tumor completely. I recommend cleaning the body and the wound location as often as possible. You can use perfume to smell nice when there is no smell of pus. When the perfume mixes with the unpleasant smell, it smells even worse. It is very important to buy quality perfume. Sometimes it is quite expensive. That's why I often buy perfume at a discount or reduced prices in outlet stores and Duty-Free. I also often order perfume at https://www.decantx.com.
