I am working as carer with the disable child in school. In toilet time when we hoisted the child to set the child in toilet, I have to hold and carry the child to set her/him in perfect position in toilet seat. Please I want advice, now I got mastectomy without reconstruction and removed 4 lymph nots under armpit since April 2022 and I am in Hermon therapy treatment for 5 years without chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment and my sick note will finish in end of September so when I go back to my job can I do my work as normal as before I mean as carry the child during the toilet time after hoisting as I mentioned in above? If it is no how long I have not carry a heavy things? I really appreciate for any advice even if you told me you have change your work.
Thank you for all your help and support
Best regards
Mary
Hi, first of all I hope your recovery is going well and your ongoing treatment is manageable.
Please take care and take all the time you need to recover before going back to work. Your medical team will be able to give you personalised advice about what is right for you.
This is my second go at posting a reply, not sure what happened to the first one! I am a SENCO with responsibility for managing situations like you described in school. I was a bit worried to read you are taking the weight of the child in the toilet process as the hoist should be doing that for you. It is still a physically demanding task but shouldn't involve weight bearing but more manoeuvring. When it is time to go back to school please ask for a return to work interview and risk assessment to be done so that arrangements are out in place to make this work for you. Schools have to provide manual handling training for people doing this and your trainer should be able to personalise the advice for your situation. I know that staff working with children will put the child's needs first but this is a time to think of your needs too. You absolutely should be able to go back to school in your job and your legal rights in that regards are protected.
I have had the same surgery as you and I am being given physio to help me get flexibility and strength back so that might be worth looking into too.
I hope all goes well for you and your school are as supportive as they should be when it is time for you to return.
