Having a 4th lumpectomy next week.
Was told by a registrar that I needed a mastectomy when it was found margins were not clear after 3rd op. This was discussed by the board before I went in for results. But when I saw my surgeon 2 weeks later (she was on holiday when the board met and when my results were given to me by registrar) she disagreed with the board and said it would be another lumpectomy. Surgeon and my husband convinced me it was the right decision. I was almost relieved that a mastectomy would be the end (ish) of it all. Now back to lumpectomy and waiting for results with a twisted stomach and not being able to think of anything else.
ER+, HER2 - grade 2 and grade 3 cancers removed. 2 in 7 lymph nodes involved.
Feeling rather anxious about 4th lumpectomy failing. If it does fail, I'll be requesting a mastectomy. Had enough.
Been given different answers regarding to treatment following surgery ending. Chemo, radiotherapy, hormone blocking meds... surgeon said radiotherapy and meds. Nurse said poss chemo. Another nurse said this will be discussed with oncologist (not seen one yet). But all mentioned optima trial. Head fit to burst!
Anyone been in a similar situation?
Hi - I had three lumpectomies and then a mastectomy ( no cancer left when I had the mastectomy) so I didn’t in fact need a mastectomy or lumpectomy except for the small margin, your surgeon must be confident of clear margins this time otherwise wouldn’t put you through it again ? I know it’s a real pain and quite depressing keep getting the no clear margins news , but hang in there ! In terms of next treatment , until you see the oncologist you won’t know what they suggest , and me having a mastectomy meant no radiation so you still have a way to go before you will get some definite answers. Just try and concentrate on your next surgery. One step at a time is the best plan .
Hope all goes well

Thanks Jo
My surgeon is a big time breast conservationist. She almost pleaded with me to not have a mastectomy. I was all up for it but she actually made me feel bad, as did my husband. She went on to say she'll go in as many times as needed so I'm not super confident that we'll get clear margins this time. She said she'd worked on a lady 9 times before! Wish I'd stuck to my guns and gone for the mastectomy. Oh well, fingers crossed.
Going to stop thinking about what next until I see the oncologist - thanks for the advice. As you say, one step at a time.
Did you have reconstruction?
Nicky
Hi Nicky I initially had an implant , changed after 2 1/2 years for a Diep flap. Whatever reconstruction have (and mine is fab) it is not your real breast and , besides not having a nipple , I have very little feeling , although the Diep is warm and part of my body , unlike the implant. I needed chemo so my consultant was reluctant to keep having a go at clear margins , so I had my mastectomy after my chemo .
Hopefully you will get a good result this time ,
Jo x
