Do I need Chemo if my lymph nodes have cancer?

Hi

On Tuesday 28th July I had lumpectomies on both breasts to remove cancerous lumps with the removal of 3 lymph nodes on the left side.
Still waiting for the results from the right boob
The left boob unfortunately has no clear margin and needs to be removed.
2 of the 3 lymph nodes are cancerous so all lymph nodes on my left side need to be removed.
I was told I wouldn’t need chemotherapy because of the type of cancer I have but when I saw the consultant on Friday he said he was undecided if I needed chemotherapy!!!!!
So confused! Anyone info would be so appreciated xxx
Thanks
  • if it’s hormone positive cancer, they will possibly now to an oncotype test on the tissue to give you a recurrance score. How old are you if you don’t mind me asking? They usually do them for post-menopausal women as standard. If you’re 40 or over, you may be asked if you want to join the optima trial and see if you get assigned chemo depending on this score. X

  • Hi, from my own experience, the decision will be made by your MDT (multi disciplinary team). So, likely you will be discussed at the next MDT meeting. At my hospital these are every Thursday. The MDT consists of the surgeons / consultants, oncologists, Consultant radiotherapists, with breast care nurses in attendance also. No one can make a decision on their own - always fully discussed. • Hi

    Thanks for responding.

I am ER+ and 52 year old. I will look at the trial you mentioned.

I am aware the decision isn’t the consultants alone but I wasn’t expecting to have chemotherapy. Since the review I have done some research and haven’t come across anyone that had cancer in the lymph nodes and didn’t have chemotherapy. So if its the normal why are they undecided?
Feel like I am going round in circles.

  • I had chemotherapy, yeah. I don’t know why they are undecided. To be honest a8 don’t think ai asked enough questions even though I was given loads of opportunity to. I was like a rabbit in the headlights. I’m guessing that even if you have it, you wont start until after mastectomy? (I had one of those too ….)

  • My aunt was 56 and had it in one lymp mode but didn’t have chemo. If you look up that trial on cancer research website, it explains the oncotype thing. I think a lot of post-menopausal women avoid chemo if their score is low to medium and only in 1-3 lymph nodes. X

  • one of the things I discovered was that each discipline sits in its own silo. If you see the surgical team after surgery, they don’t talk to you about chemo, they just refer you on to the medical oncologist who’s specialism it is. So it’s maybe not that they are undecided but that you haven’t yet met with the discipline specialist.
