Balance after chemo and radiotherapy

Hi all, I haven’t been here for a while.  I pretty much finished treatment at the end of 2021 having had a mastectomy - after that lymph node removal 7 out of 14 positive then chemo followed by radiotherapy.  I suffered horrendous pain in my coccyx low back area and had days when I could barely walk.  I’ve started Pilates but my balance is awful.  I’m sure the chemo has made things worse.  Just wondered if anyone else is or has had a similar experience.  I’m stiff every day on waking - will it ever get better?  JG x

  • Sorry no one has replied to you, hopefully my answer will get you bumped up to the top.  love from  Ann

  • hi  I had 7 months of chemo following lumpectomy and full node clearence as I had 5 of 11 with cancer, I am waiting for radiotherapy,  I too have had terrible lower back pain but sort of just got on with it, didn't mention it what with everything else going on....then I had a weekly call from onco telling me I have a fractured spine ..its squashed and could be start of osteoporosis....I am seeing him face to face next week...but he has prescribed me vit d and calcium and he stopped my last two chemo cycles. it wasn't there in Jan when I started my chemo...but was in May so I have suspicions chemo may have caused it? my balance is ok but I am a fair bit of pain and very stiff and worried th8s is for life now! it's not fun at all is it xx

  • Hello Hev999,  I actually fractured my back before my diagnosis the scans show it is healed but I wonder if the chemo attacked the area.  I mean chemo attacks everything right?  I’ve started doing Pilates so I’m hoping that will help.  I do have some arthritis at the base of my spine (maybe chemo) or just age!   During chemo the pain was so bad I was on walking sticks.  It’s much better now but my balance is awful.  I wish you all the best xx

  • That's interesting - I'm coming up to my last cycle of chemo (docetaxel)  next week and I am just beginning to notice lower back pain.   I wondered if it was due to the chemo too.

  • My chemo was every 2 weeks starting with EC (the red stuff).  I was given some pretty strong painkillers for a while but they never stopped the pain.  Having said that it’s gradually getting better.

  • I’m now having Zometa (for bones) every 6 months.  Perhaps you will too!

  • something I will ask onco, thank you x
