Just an update, went for my biopsy result today, cancer has returned same breast estrogen positive 2 cm mass, now waiting to go go for a ct scan to check its not spread, yet another wait.

Will need a mastectomy, possible chemo depending on lymph node results.

Not a good day Pensive

  • Absolutely not a good day for you, I’m so sorry! The same happened to a colleague of mine, she had a lumpectomy and other treatment, not sure what, don’t think she had chemo, but hers returned in the same breast. She was devastated; but 8 years on she’s fine and getting on with life! You will too; stay positive, if it’s in your breast still, then that’s probably the only place it is, there’s no reason why it should have gone anywhere else Fingers crossedUnfortunately the worry of the bugger coming back is a cross we all have to bear, but hopefully if it’s hormone positive, it’s more treatable. I’m sure your oncologist will sort out the best treatment for you. I had a mastectomy and chemo followed by radiotherapy and I’m glad I did, it’s do-able and you’ll do it ! Best wishes and fingers crossed for a good outcome x

    1. Thanks for the kind and positive words Mazz, so happy for you, getting through, and yes its always with you.
    2. If you don't mind me asking did you opt for a reconstruction?
  • No I didn’t Kippy, I was advised against it because I had suspected pectoral muscle involvement (which turned out to be ok). I was told that I could always revisit the possibility of reconstruction much later if I wanted. But to be honest, I wasn’t about to be showing my boobs off anyway, so I’ve decided against it. I wear a prosthesis and it’s absolutely fine; you really can’t tell when I have my clothes on, even looks perfectly natural with swimwear. Another reason I don’t want it is because weight fluctuations don’t affect a reconstructed boob, so there’d be a dissimilarity in them if (more like when) I gain weight. But my main reason is that I’ve heard people seem to have more worries about reoccurrence with a reconstruction, but I don’t know that for sure, it’s just one less worry I feel I don’t need. However, if I were under 50, I may feel differently, it’s such a personal choice and one we’re lucky to have. Keep smiling, this will pass and life will go on. We have to believe that …… xxxx

    • Yes I agree, and to be honest how reconstruction was explained i think I would choose not to have it, I don't really want to put myself through any more operations than are needed and yes maybe if I was younger, I am 52 so I don't think my boobs would be on show anytime,
    • For me getting rid of this disease is most important.
    • Thanks for all the info on the prosthesis, really helpful xxx
  • I’m really sorry you’ve had a reoccurrence. I’m a second time arounder too and doing ok. Reconstruction is a personal decision and can be different for all. I just wanted to say though that whilst it’s true that a prosthetic breast doesn’t gain or loose weight, one formed from your body tissue such as a diep does, it’s one of the reasons people opt for it. I had that operation in January so I’ve still to test it out but it was the advice I was given. All the best of luck to you x
