Covid 19 tablet treatment

Good morning all,

So that's a good start, I was due to have my second chemo treatment today and I end up testing positive for Covid yesterday. I've spent a good part of the day in A&E for various tests and a dose of antibiotics. Thankfully they let me go home.

My symptoms are temperature, cough and runny nose.

I have been offered the Covid tablets but I am not sure if I want them. Has anyone taken them? Is it worth taking? I assume that like any medication, there are side effects too.

Thank you all for your insight and take care.

  • I think they're just anti-virals. Given you're going through chemo, I think it would be a good idea to take them as your immune system will be very low. You also don't want to delay your chemo treeatment by too long, so the sooner you're over covid the better.

  • Thank you, my worry is when they mention the tablets, they talked side effects very quickly. I will talk more about it when they call for a follow up. It's the first tine I have Covid and it's all overwhelming.

  • I"m out the other side of chemo a while ago,  but when I registered my positive LFT last Tuesday ii was then emailed saying I could apply for thr antibodies if my area took part.  London isn't part of the trial anymore,  but it gave a figure of 100, 000's who'd already taken part.

I had the Alpha variant unvaccinated in 2020,  a day in A&E being tested as my bloods were terrible and the xray showed covid lungs.  With the omicron 5 variant (prevalent in London and I've not been affected by earlier omicron variants despite working in a school and on public transport) it was like a bad cold and flu at the same time. Much easier to handle, though I took vitamin D, antihistamine,  a good multi,  echinacea and probiotic capsules recommended for covid (L. Plantarum 299v). I'm already negative again,  but still feel a bit dizzy and sick.  Good luck! Xx

  • I had IV antibodies when I had covid and had no side effects at all and it really helped me start to feel better. I was told these treatments have cut deaths in vulnerable groups by over 80%. They can’t tell who will be really ill and anecdotally it’s around day 7/8 people take a turn for the worse by which time it’s too late for the treatments x

  • Thank you both,

Reading your comments, It seems that the tablets are a good think to take after all. Even more as I found out that I  have my next chemo booked for next week. I am glad I have all my Covid vaccines as it could have been worst. When they mentioned antibiotics yesterday, I thought it was going to be a few tablets to swallow. I realised how wrong I was when I saw the IV :-(

I am glad you're doing better.

    All the best x

  • I was contacted again today for a follow up and re-offered the tablets. I will take them from tomorrow.  3 tablets 3 times a day for 5 days. Ever that of as intravenous, I think I had enough needles in me for a little while Yum I was also told that the antiviral tablets were used for swine flu among other things. I was also told that there has been a lot of trial done for Covid. The best thing is that it won't interfere with my chemo.

    Let hopes it works.
