I am waiting for a date for my lumpectomy. Do I need to wear a particular bra after the operation? Plus I know every recovery is different for each person. But are there similar dos and don't for most people?

Hi carol
i was advised to use a maximum support fastening sports bra to wear straight after surgery and then sleep in it for 2 weeks too. They gave me one but lots of shops sell them. Someone recommended Asda sell a good priced range but I found Tesco ones adequate. Look for very soft cups and band as you’ll want comfort.

I bought post surgery bras from Marks and Spencer. Both styles (black sports with zip up front and nude eye and hook front fastening) were very comfortable. I am pretty sure you get the VAT off of you are having surgery too. I slept in the cotton vests with hidden support as I found wearing the bras all the time uncomfortable. You can get these in M&S or I bought some cheap and cheerful ones from Primark. I had Auxillary node clearance also so maybe the wound under my arm made bras more uncomfortable. All the best when your surgery comes xxx
I bought front fastening non underwired bras. I wore my bra at night for the first week post op and then found I was comfortable enough without after that. Once the staples (from the node incision) were taken out and the incision from the lumpectomy healed up externally (internal stitches for that) I went back to my underwired bras, but made sure they were seamless as the seams made the lumpectomy incision feel a bit sore. Hope this helps!
I had a lumpectomy in March and found these crop tops from M&S invaluable: Flexifit Non Wired Crop Top | BODY | M&S (marksandspencer.com). They also do them in larger sizes.
I've just completed radiotherapy and they're great for during/after that.

I think it depends on your cup size, how active you are, and how much support you normally need. As a HH cup person I was only comfortable in full cup compression sports bras for quite a few weeks, in fact over 3 months on, I still wear them in preference to anything else unless I want to be smart. I wore a bra to sleep for the first 3 weeks plus the odd few days when it has had niggles subsequently. For high impact activity such as running I have been wearing 2 sports bras - the one I am wearing day to day with a higher compression one over the top.
