Will I Ever See An Oncologist?

I received my cancer diagnosis on 9 February, and had a lumpectomy on 11 March. I got my results from the surgery on 30 March and was told that I should have an appointment with an oncologist a fortnight later. I was also told that some tissue had been sent to the USA for oncotype testing and the results would take 2 weeks. The oncotype ended up taking 3 weeks, and they wouldn't make an appointment with the oncologist until that result was back, then I was away for a few days so I didn't get an appointment until 5 May. Except I didn't get to see one. I saw a senior radiologist who explained about the radiotherapy, had me sign the consent forms, and gave me prescriptions for Lotrazole amd Ibandronic Acid. She said I'd see the oncologist when I had my appointment to set up the radiotherapy. So I had my appointment today, but I still haven't seen my oncologist because she's on holiday, and they maybe could have squeezed me into a clinic to see someone else, but it was busy and they didn't know how long I'd have to wait. I understand I'll have an appointment at some point after the radiotherapy, hopefully with an oncologist, and I'll be able to ask all my questions then.

I feel fed up and pissed off. I have several questions, and am no closer to getting any answers. I'm starting to think maybe I should just write a letter and ask, but right now, I'm not sure I could do it without being snarky. I know they're busy and the NHS is under all sorts of pressure, but it's almost 4 months now since I had my diagnosis. Is speaking to an oncologist really too much to ask. It all just feels like being on a conveyor belt right now, and like the whole process just adds to an already stressful situation.

  • It sounds very frustrating for you and I hope you see an oncologist soon. It sounds like very good news that you are going straight to radiotherapy and hormone treatment and not being offered chemo. I imagine that despite knowing this, you have a thousand questions about your cancer and your treatment and really need your mind put at rest. Have you called your BCN for some advice and how you feel about not seeing an oncologist yet or to see if they can answer some of your immediate questions? Wishing you all the best for your radiotherapy xx

  • I can sympathise and had a similar experience in that I only had one appointment in oncology ( to sign the consent) before then having RT and being discharged on patient led follow up. My surgeon gave me the prescription for anastrozole at my results appointment

I got copies of all my notes and then had a private consultation with an oncologist which was really helpful and I asked all my questions then. Not something everyone can do or would want to but it worked for me.

I am grateful that my treatment was quick and as expected but I can relate to that conveyer belt feeling

I hope you get the opportunity to ask your questions as it is important for us to have those answers xx

  • I'll give my BCN a ring next week. It will at least get it off my chest, even if she can't answer all my questions.

  • I have a very similar time line to you and only just saw the oncologist yesterday. I was in and out very quick. I Signed some forms and was given the request for prescription for tamoxifen to give to my GP. I also received a leaflet about radiotherapy.  I will have 10 rounds. I got a call today to have a CT planning scan next week.  I've had 3 results back from oncotpye test sent to America and one still to come back. 3 that have been returned are low scores so no chemo necessary. I'm delighted with that. Hopefully you will get more answers to put you at ease. I'm glad my journey is nearly over.  My Op was the 9th of March

I must say waiting has been the hardest part.

My breast care nurse has been the best at explaining things and the leaflets are a very informative. The oncologist was lovely but very flappy and the breast care nurse had to keep her right.
