Cellulitis?

I had my mastectomy and reconstruction back in early December 2021 and axillary nodal clearance in January. Over the last week I thought I was paranoid and that my boob was growing and myself off for being fanciful. Then yesterday it changed colour and I felt ill. So up to A&E with my chemo alert card. Talk about the golden ticket to quick treatment. I was onIV antibiotics ands lots of bloods taken all in the space of an hour. However no beds available on any ward. Nine hours in A&E & Majors then transferred to AMSDEC for seven hours. Finally transferred to what appears to be a stroke ward. I’m petrified of further infection and there seems to be so much incontinience surrounding me. Am I right to be scared? Sorry for moaning.

  • So sorry you're going through this. That looks really sore and swollen! Don't apologise on here. Assuming you're still in hospital atm? Jo x

  • That sounds scary. I'm glad you got seen speedy cellulitis is son sneaky.  Hopefully, incontinence issues will be dealt with swiftly and hygienically and you will be moved to more suitable ward one a bed comes available. Why don't you have a word with the staff nurse about your concerns or ask a relative to discuss it for you. You will recover quicker if your not scared and uncomfortable in your surroundings x I wish you a speedy recovery and your reconstruction looks great. I only had a lumpectomy and reduction on both sides and it looks better than mines.

  • Although you are in a hospital, contact your breast nurse. I may be over-cautious, but I don't have full trust that communication from where you are would reach your consultant and surgeon as fast as we would want it to. It might, but you want to be sure.

The difference in size is obvious, but although it currently does look red and swollen it is also easy to see that the surgeon has done a great job matching it to the other one, so current trouble aside, someone did a really good plastics job there!

I hope things get better fast, please let us know.

  • Have seen 1 medical consultant, 1 Oncologist and tomorrow I will be seeing my breast surgeon. Fingers crossed for their presumed combined expertise. Antibiotics not kicked in yet. Fingers crossed

  • Thank you GreyCats I’ve managed get BCNs in the loop xxx

  • Thank you, tomorrow is hopefully going to yield some results one way or another Fingers crossedFingers crossedFingers crossed

  • Thanks. I am relieved to hear that your team are now all aware of what is going on.

As for the antibiotics, this can take a little time to kick in. A blind guess from me is that they may have started you on broad-spectrum antibiotics but may switch you to more specific if needed once they know exactly what it is.

I hope you get a restful night and that things get better by morning!
