Hello everyone, 4 days post op, lumpectomy.  Just wondered why they wait 4 weeks before you see your consultant again?

I am quite anxious to hear about my treatment plan, I know they have to look at the results etc but a month is quite a time.

Thank you in advance

  • My trust said it was a long wait on pathology due to backlog and also that you need to heal before they could start chemo or radiation anyway because both would make it worse if done too soon. The wait was horrible, though.   X

  • Everything Hel39 said sounds very familiar. In my NHS trust they always tell you the pathology results would take about 2 weeks, but for me that only happened once. The other three times it took longer. I'd have much preferred if they gave me the more realistic 'expected time frame'.

In addition to what Hel39 said about needing time to heal: I approached my nurse with a description of something that was going on, and neither she nor anyone else could say at that time if what I was describing was surgery-related or chemo-related, and due to circumstances we actually did need to know the cause.

My oncologist told me, when I asked, that his guidelines were to start treatment within three months of surgery. He never said this was for the whole of the UK but the way he phrased it made me think this may well be the case. I wish I knew some of these things in advance, it could have saved me some stress.

  • Hi again,

I feel you. I had to wait 2.5 months for my surgery, whilst other people in this forum had theirs within days!

I am 4 days post mastectomy, seeing my oncologist on Wed to check healing, remove drain etc and then the week after to discuss pathology and treatment plan. Have you asked them why it takes 4 weeks?

  • No not yet, will probably get in touch this week, hope you are doing ok xx
