Hi, had my second lot of treatment 2 weeks late due to tooth abcess which I had to have antibiotics for and then removal of tooth I feel like another tooth is starting to feel really sore. Is this usual with EC and has any body else suffered, its been worse than the side effects of chemotherapy.

  • I am so sorry that you are having trouble with your teeth - you must be feeling pretty rough. I don't know if it is usual, but  I found my gums receded on EC which was really quite painful at times. I ended up using difflam mouth wash, and difflam gel both prescribed by my GP and then topped up by my chemo unit. The gel coats your gums and has anaesthetic and antiseptic properties. I have interdental brushes and floss, which I used about an hour after every meal (the enamel is soft for about an hour after food) followed by brushing teeth. I have an electric toothbrush with soft heads. My dentist advised an non-foaming toothpaste like sensodyne, but if your teeth are really sore, there is another that is milder that can be prescribed. I really hope your poor teeth, gums and abscess settle down  on antibiotics really soon and that you start to feel better.

  • Thanks Zephyr for your reply, I managed to get some gelclare from my chemo day unit , it does work very well also, yes  I have a soft tooth brush too. Hoping it all settles down once chemo is complete, which is a while yet but onwards and upwards, I will beat this .

  • Hiya

Ive been having gum issues , got some mouthwash and gel similar to Zephyr and it’s really helped along with using a soft toothbrush . I use a kids toothpaste sometimes  because even the sensodyne bothers me

Hopefully it will resolve itself eventually  when you’ve finished with chemo
