Hello, I finished my treatment in January and get letters from nhs England together with lateral flow tests and a pcr test, saying I might be more at risk and be suitable for treatments such as the anti viral, if I catch covid.
Now my question is this, am I immuno-suppressed and eligible for the 3rd booster jab because I have recently had cancer? I got nowhere with my GP practice in that the receptionist called me back with a message informing me I couldn't have one until after the 10th April and did not know if I should have one. I have booked one online at a centre, but don't want to get there and be turned away if I'm not eligible, especially as I'm still feeling a bit fragile at the moment. Has anyone else finished the treatment and had the 3rd booster please?
Yeah. My oncologist wanted me to wait after chemo before having the last vaccination, to give my immune system time to recover. If I remember his guideline right, then with your last chemo in January you should be ok for the vaccine now. If in doubt, ask your nurse to check with the oncologist to make sure.
I also got a letter from my oncologist stating I should have the vaccine, but in the end no one at the vaccination centre wanted to see it even though their appointment letter had said to bring it with me.
Hello Greycats, many thanks for the reply. I was so fortunate in that I only needed radiotherapy. I have once again asked my gp practice and they "don't know the nhs England guidelines as they keep changing", and "that they are vaccinating only people in care homes and elderly who are housebound and are not sending any letters."
I have made an appointment online with the hospital centre as I want the spring booster, and think I'll keep the appointment and take the nhs England email about my health conditions and see if that gets me through the door. My husband is on the at risk register and he was questioned and asked for proof and at one point, thought he may be turned away!
It probably sounds a bit ridiculous, but I've been worrying that I'll be embarrassed by them and turned away.
This week I had my 5th covid vaccine - my second booster following 3 full doses last year. They just sent me an appointment by email.
I finished active treatment about 6 months ago. Here in Scotland you get placed on a "high risk" list during active treatment, and remain on it for a year afterwards I think. That gives you access to boosters and the anti-viral covid drugs if necessary.
I doubt I am immunocompromised any more, but I haven't had a blood test for a while so who knows. I'll keep taking the vaccines if they offer them to me - might as well.
Your GP is obviously clueless, and his information is wrong, because they do send letter, I am looking at mine now.... it is unture that they are only vaccinating people in care home and the elderly, or else I would not have been invited for a 4th vaccine based solely on my cancer status, seeing I am not elderly nor in a care home, nor housebound.
I would bypass the GP completely and talk to the breast nurse, ask her for a clear letter from your oncologist stating that you do need this booster, then take that to the vaccination centre with you, in case it's needed.
Me again! I telephoned the vaccination centre and spoke to a lovely lady who told me not to cancel my appointment, but to take the email from nhs England and my prescription showing the adjuvent medication. So it sounds promising. Unfortunately, my gp practice is useless.
Yours and mine too. When it comes to anything that is cancer-related I ignore the GP completely and go straight to my breast nurse.
I am glad the vaccination centre lady was able to put some sanity into this. Please let us know how it goes on the day of the appointment.
I spoke to a friend who works in a vaccination centre and the severe immunosuppressed are in the list for the “ Spring booster”. Suggest you go to a walk in vaccination centre if you can.The only limitation I think is if you have had Covid, then you have to wait for for some time afterwards, I think they recommend 4 weeks.
Just to let you know that I had my spring booster today. Not a very nice experience as I got a bit tearful having to tell them about the cancer, but had email from nhs England and my prescription to back me up. The nurse was lovely, but I could really have done without it. I'll maybe feel a bit safer going out and about now. Thanks to you all for replying.
