Breast reconstruction

Hi, I had an implant in 2020 at the same time as my mastectomy but then needed chemo and radiotherapy, the radiotherapy has coursed the implant to go hard and misshapen after 2 years. I saw my breast surgeon a few weeks ago and she has recommended me to have reconstruction surgery which i know is a big operation that's why i originally went for the implant i have been referred to another consultant to talk it through.

I was wondering if if anyone who has had the operation whether there are any concerns or if they are pleased with the results. At the moment i am quite lop sided and hoping to get a better result.

Many thanks

Lulu

  • I had reconstruction when I had a partial mastectomy last autumn. Tissue was removed from under my arm for the new breast and I lost the nipple. After radiotherapy the area did become hard and numb but you are warned this could happen. The problem is the breast I had surgery  on is only two thirds the size of the other one. Also the breast points sideways instead of the front. It could look better but that’s the NHS for you.I don’t think the NHS is concerned about looks. In the future I have something done about it.

  • Thank you for your reply, i will have tissue taken from my stomach but wont be worth it is the outcome is the same.

  • Hi Lulupop, I know a lady who has just had a reconstruction with her tummy. It took her a while to recover as it is a major operation. But they did an incredible job and she is doing very well, 9 months after the op.  Her breast was looking great and very much the same as the other one. She is a cup D. I was really impressed with the results. The plastic surgeon should explain and show you some pictures of other patients who had it done. This may help to talk to them and reassure you too. All the best. Hope this helps

  • Thank you for your reply that is very reassuring.
