I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2019, had my mastectomy in August 2019 when it was found to be worse than at first thought, so it was followed by six chemo treatments, but as I reacted so badly to it, the last one was cancelled (T and FEC). I then had twelve months of Herceptin injections. I was so ill being sick and exhausted during chemo, I lost a lot of weight and had no one to support me, which made things difficult, but I got through it. Thought after three months of recovery, that I would get back to normal, but here I am, over two years post chemotherapy and still feeling exhausted. I go for a walk each day and do what I can in the mornings at home, but if I push it, I get so ill with exhaustion, I’m bad all the next day. Does anyone else feel like this, is this normal? My hair, which was waist length, is growing back slowly, but hair underarms and eyelashes have not recovered well. Of course, hair where you don’t want it, eg under chin grows okay! That’s typical, Sod’s law I guess. It would be nice to hear if anyone else still feels unable to resume normal activities after this length of time. I turned 69 yesterday, bye the way, but always felt younger until recently. Just recovering from gastroenteritis this weekend, which saw me cancelling the weekend away and that would have been the first time out in three years almost!
Hi Giuliella, first, Happy Birthday for yesterday!
When I asked my oncologist when I could expect the side effects from chemo to disappear, he said some could take weeks, some might take months, and said it could take up to a year past chemo. I am not sure if he was giving me an answer that was specific to me, or an answer that would be true for any patient.
One thing I have been looking into recently is whether the chemo drugs I have been given might cause an inability of the body to absorb certain nutrients, and other such issues. This is because being told something is a result of chemo does not actually tell me the acutal chain of causation, which I need to have if I want to be able to address things properly. In the meantime, I am taking some supplements. There are different schools of thought about that, but my viewpoint is that if I know I am not doing myself harm, then I may as well try, on the chance that it might help.
Based on this approach, some people try acupuncture, reflexology, any of the complementary therapies.
Hi giuliella
I was diagnosed 2019 aswell and remember your posts. I had two surgeries, chemo rads and now letrozole and bone tablet. I have been back at work a while, went back through radiotherapy. I am a Nurse and work 4 days, just got my dream job aswell. I agree with you though, I get tired easily and every so often need ' time out ' sleep in etc. I do feel it's getting better slowly and summer will definitely help. I try to do little things I enjoy/ treats. Like u my hair is back now just past shoulders which I am very grateful for !!
Best wishes
Xx
Hello Pusheen, thanks for replying and the other lady who wished me a belated happy birthday, cheers for that. At least it’s not only me then, who feels exhausted when I do something extra. I’ve not seemed to have the mental strength to resume hobbies, but I know I should. I have been doing the usual housework, shopping online and in person locally, cooking from scratch every day for my husband and myself and looking after him, as he has lung cancer. He spent four months in hospital and came home just prior to the first covid lockdown, he’s still with me so far and we both go for walks every day, but he does go further than me, bless. We were due to go away for three days this Easter weekend to see some friends of his at a Native American styled powwow in the Glastonbury area, but I went down with gastroenteritis so we had to unfortunately cancel. We used to go to the USA for these powwows, but that’s all finished for us now, but we’re still alive and kicking for now!
I too get exhausted if I do too much and really have to pace myself. I finished chemo Jan 2021 and main treatment April 2021.
Once I was beyond a year past chemo, I had assumed the exhaustion was the sudden medical menopause and exemestane I need to take. I don't sleep well with night sweats waking me throughout the night and then insomnia on top. I can find it difficult to fall asleep or go back to sleep when I wake.
I assumed it was this that was making me exhausted rather than lasting effects of chemo (I had EC-T), though I had expected not to fully recover from chemo for 12-18 months.
Interesting what Grey Cats says about uptake of nutrients.
I'm also working full time, albeit from home which helps enormously, but I also worked throughout treatment and I sometimes wonder whether that has left me shattered.
I'm managing to do things that I enjoy but every few weeks I need a day of doing very little at the weekend which is not like the old me at all.
Hello all, I always cook from scratch each day and have a varied diet, so not sure if it’s a lack of vitamins, though this could be the problem, just not convinced. I will try to do some hobbies soon. I did buy some postiplug plants, Phlox, to replace some of our “lawn” which has been taken over by wild strawberries, but some in their seed trays are going brown, not sure what went wrong, but as I’m not a gardener, am asking the company where I bought them from online for advice. If and when they are ready to be planted out, that’s going to be a lot of work, as it will require me to actually find the fork or spade and dig the wild strawberries out before I can plant them! Have I taken on too much I wonder?
@pusheen not sure if I’ve done my replies correctly to alert those who I’m responding to, so this is just another to rectify that, sorry guys.
