I have recently be diagnosed with HER2 + Breast Cancer in my left breast, two areas Grade 1 & Grade 11 . My question is how quickly do I need to have my Marina Coil removed ? I am 56 years old

  • Hi, sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I was told to remove mine as soon as I could but wasn’t put under any panic pressure, I called the lady who does them  at my gp’s was great and it was taken out the following week x

  • Hi Tilly

fies the marina coil effect the breast cancer ir her2 +

as I have two cancerous areas found in my right breast. I was told by the radiologist I get my diagnosis tomorrow. So frightened. I also have the marina coil x

  • It affects your hormone levels and they want to stop that. How much it affects your cancer is down to the hormonal reactive nature of your cancer as it is progesterone releasing. It doesn’t affect HER2. Talk it through with your specialist tomorrow at your appointment. As I say I wasn’t put under pressure to get it out fast, just to get it removed. Good luck tomorrow x

  • Thank you Anna

hope your treatment going forward goes well. Seems like it’s it’s early stages. But I don’t know a great deal about this journey x

  • Thank you. Well, I’m nearly out the other side now, 7 rounds of chemo, mastectomy and diep reconstruction in January and on going Phesgo. I’m returning to work in 2 weeks. It seems insurmountable where you are, and it’s had some very tough moments in there but my eyes are firmly forward. All best to you and happy to help with any other questions x

  • Ah wow that’s such good news and massive hope.
I have a 12 year old son and also a single parent so going through this nitemare very alone. The waiting to hear what I’m heading into has been the worst week of my life. At times find it hard to breathe let alone put in a brave face.
tomorrow can’t come quick enough in one way in the other I’m frightened to hear the news.

I’m so glad to hear your on the other side of this journey and returning to a bit normality.  This must have been gruelling for you alone too x

  • Yes, it does have its challenges being alone with your child but I have found some silver linings in there. We are now incredibly close, we were close before but this has cemented us, we’ve been through a unique experience, our trust is so solid, she rose to the challenge and has shown herself to be a compassionate and resilient girl and that in turn has somehow bolstered her confidence in a weird way. I don’t have a partner at all but I’ve had great support from friends because they don’t expect a partner is doing things for me when maybe they’re not. I’ve also had the freedom when I’ve felt unwell to read in bed at midnight or have a flask of herbal tea in my room for 2am when the steroids have had me up and not worry I’ve disturbed anyone. Yes I’ve felt sometimes alone or worried incessantly that’s it’s all been too much for her but we’ve got through xx

  • Hi,

I had merina coil for nearly 5 yrs and had removed as no longer effective. Diagnosed with ER+ breast cancer grade 3, 3 yrs later. Not sure related as marina has progesterone and not oestrogen but still regret having the thing.

  • Hi all

i spoke to the consultant about mirena coil. He told me to get it taken out after operation.
I was diagnosed with IDC grade 1 at present. 12mm and 5mm areas  Er+ her2-  Op is in the 3 May so will know def results in about 2-3 weeks. Booked in for coil removal on the 10/05

    hope all doing ok x

  • I was told asap - my pathology was ER 8/8 and PR 8/8. The coil releases a fake progesterone (progestin) and there are some links to increased risk. The timing certainly fit with mine as it was placed 3 years before I got diagnosed. I do have b/c history in my family, but none pre-menopausal, so I will always wonder if this tipped the balance. But it was probably just bad luck. X
