Dear All, just some advice really. If you get covid while you are undergoing chemotherapy, within 6 months of chemotherapy or are still having Phesgo (which affects your immune system) then please call your emergency red card line and let them know immediately, a positive LFT with symptoms means you don’t have to wait for a positive PCR.
They will arrange for you to access either antivirals or IV antibodies which should be within 5 days of symptoms starting/a positive PCR. There is so much confusion about how to access all these things but in our situation it could make a real difference.
If you haven’t been sent a PCR to keep at home ‘in case’ you should’ve done (but some people have been missed out by accident) so order one now to have in the house so you don’t have the added delay of waiting for a PCR to be delivered.
Hope that helps x
Hi Anna, I was emailed about this, and the following day a box with 7 LFTs landed here, but no PCR.
The email advised that if I report a positive LFT they would be contacting me within 24 hours and that if I have not heard from them within that time, to contact the GP, 111, or the oncology team, but as they did not specify what part of the team, I figured they meant my nurse. The red line makes more sense though, so thanks for highlighting this point!
Also, the 6 months post chemo. I have been wondering about that, because, for instance, I was advised to keep on self-isolating until I get past 3 months from last chemo, and my return to work date would fall after that, but before the first 6 months are up. So again, good to have some clarification about that, because my oncology team were themselves unsure.
I am now wondering if the letters they send out have more information than the email I received. Again, I thought the email was replacing the letter. A couple of good lessons for me here about making assumptions... and thanks for bringing this up!
I know lots of areas have different protocols and the letters they are sending out are different, why make it easy?? Having the positive LFT test is the trigger for additional treatment so you probably don’t need the positive PCR. The positive LFT was enough for me to access it too. In our area gp’s have nothing to do with covid treatments and can’t get us the additional treatments, I’m not sure if that’s nationwide.
The covid consultant I spoke to yesterday at Stoke Mandeville was excellent. The overriding message is that people like us need to get additional treatment within 5 days of a positive test and/or symptoms starting. This will be either antivirals or antibodies, those of us on phesgo can’t have antivirals apparently. She said they don’t know who will deteriorate quickly and they also have cases of some being ill for weeks so it’s imperative we get the additional med support within that 5 day window, after that it can all become a bit more complicated and they’ve had great results on lowering admissions with these treatments xx
Hi, I tested positive (LFT) last Sunday. I called 111. They said not to bother with the PCR, they'd register me with the hospital. Hospital called on Monday morning and I’d started the anti virals by Monday afternoon. Fabulous service from NHS.
Fabulous service from NHS.
Always good to see!
Just finished my IV antibodies and am about to head home. There was a lady in with me who had a different health condition but has been given the right run about getting the treatment but she had finally got it through 111 too x it was very slick today, so grateful to the lovely nurses fully PPE’d up to treat us x
