fingernails after chemotherapy

I have had EC and docetaxel followed by herceptin. Ridges formed on most of the fingernails and then the tops became brittle and flaky. I did try wearing false nails which I glued on, but they did not stay on very long and when they did come off, they pulled the rest of the top of the nail with the false nail. The best solution I have found is to take vitamin E and Omega 3 supplements, along with painting the affected nails with Cutex intense recovery and massaging it into the nail. It doesn't stop the nails being brittle but it does lessen the amount. hope this helps.

  • Hi . That's useful information. I just read your post (I'm from the Womb group) as my nails were affected by chemo therapy - in a good way. I was on a different regime (Paclitaxel and Carboplatin) and my nails are the longest and the hardest they've been in my life!

The chemo info I was given did mention nails may become brittle and even blacken. Advice was not to use nail polish, nor false nails but basically do what you're doing now. I hope your damaged nail isn't too painful!
