Acupuncture - needles in both arms?

I have had my 4th acupuncture session for menopausal symptoms and it is going well. For this later session, I had a big reaction for the first 24 hours of multiple hot flushes day and night and then after that, they have reduced significantly and I even slept for two 3.5/4 hour stretches last night which is unheard of! So I am pleased that it seems to be starting to make  difference though still a way to go.

So far, I've avoided my surgery arm as I thought this was the right thing to do. But I was talking about what all the different points did to the acupuncturist and the one for body temperature is on your hand/wrist which got me wondering whether the effect would be better if I could have both hands involved. Acupuncture is trying to treat you holistically so this is not the only point that makes a difference to hot flushes, but it was the only one specifically for temperature.

I did talk it through with the acupuncturist and said I would try and find out more. She is a nurse so thought that the risk of lymphedema was mostly when you inject something into a vein or take blood from a vein. Acupuncture needles do not go in very deep and I was also thinking that I have had plenty of scratches and cuts on that hand since my operation with no issues and the needles are sterile, she said she can also use alcoholic wipes on that hand before and after, and I don't see any evidence of them once they're removed.

I only had 3 lymph nodes out and my oncologist said the risk of lymphoedema for me is very low.

I will try and get in touch with the BCNs but has anyone else had acupuncture into their surgery arm? The more I think about this, the more I think it would be fine but I also don't take the risk lightly.

I think it would be fine. Don't worry! Avoid psychological effects!

  • I had 1 in wrist of affected arm. to be honest, I've had 2 needles in head, 2 in tum and the rest are lower legs. My acupuncturist has treated cancer patients before and can still do the required whilst avoiding the affected arm. Its up to you but 1 small needle wouldn't be bad. I had no reaction but conscious we are all different. Mine is helping my energy levels, sleep and hot flushes too. good luck x

  • Thank you, it does seem like a very small risk, I think I will just go for it. She puts them in lower legs, head, tummy and wrists so would be good to have them in both wrists. I think it may have been your posts that made me want to try and it and really glad I have!

  • Yes I think so too, seems low risk! I'm not sure what the link you put in is - did you mean to add that?

  • I'm glad its helping. I was unsure at first but others said it helped them so nothing to lose (apart from the money but I'm now at the stage where I need to look after myself so its a treat!) x

  • How many have you had? I had 2 nights of barely any hot flashes and good sleep after my first treatment and then no huge differences for the next 2 sessions, back to night sweats, insomnia though I think the daytime hot flashes have decreased. Then after this week's session, I had the really bad spell of hot flushes for about 24 hours. Apparently getting worse is a thing - your body reacting and changing.

She said 4-6 sessions to notice any real difference and I'm hoping that maintenance won't need to be too often if it does help as like you, I need to pay privately.

  • Glad you're finding the acupuncture helpful.

I have it for general wellbeing as fortunate not have hot flushes etc ( I am 12 years post menopausal) and to support my immune system functioning well. My sleep is significantly improved and back to where it was and my energy is nearly back to usual ( even after 4 months of anastrozole)

I'm a total convert now and now have monthly maintenance sessions and will continue to do so. As has been said  this is for me and my wellbeing and acupuncture treats the whole person/ system

  • This is great to hear and glad it is helping for you too. I've had it in the past with success and I think it makes sense to reset your systems after chemo too - everything must be so out of whack!

  • Hi

i have my acupuncture at The Royal Marsden and the doctor who does it always checks with me which side I had surgery on and avoids that arm.

    Glad it’s helping for you,,,, I’m a convert x

  • I had 6 sessions before xmas. and after I'm up to 5 after. I'm trying to go every fortnight. I try and go in an afternoon as I can sleep quite well after it. My sleep is still a bit hit and miss - I think in part its also stress as trying to cope with a parent with Alzheimer's but I do still have both parents. I still have a swollen boob and swelling in armpit area that appeared following rads and that is getting me down a bit. I can still have really down days but I do walk to my sessions so I get 15 mins of walking before and then 15 min after. it is helping so happy to carry on. I can't say if it was the acupuncture as it commenced after but I had really hot flushes at the beginning of taking tamoxifen and then they went off. she's focussing on energy levels and sleep at the moment.
