Hi all I hope you're all well and able to enjoy the beautiful sunshine. I'm due to see my surgeon on Wed regarding surgery date etc but have tested positive for Covid on Thursday. Does anyone know if this will delay my surgery. It will be 4 weeks since finishing chemo and was hoping surgery would be sooner rather later but I've read that it is suggested to wait 7 weeks after covid for elective surgery!!!! Has anyone else been in this situation please?
Many thanks
Vicki xx
The hospital will have a clear guideline both on that and also on whether or not you should attend on Wednesday, which may still be possible if you are by then symptom-free and have the required negative tests they may ask you to do on the days leading up to the appointment (for instance, they may ask you to do a test on Monday and another one on Wednesday morning, and come over if you are symptoms-free and both tests are negative.) By the way, I don't think I would call surgery for breast cancer "elective;" it's not as if you are doing it for cosmetic reasons.
If the covid status means you are unable to attend in person, a phone consultation may be possible if so desired, so you could ask your nurse about that too if you call her tomorrow morning to find out about the rest.
Thank you GreyCats, that's helpful. I am just concerned that surgery will be delayed. Had chemo first from Oct last year and like everyone I suppose I want to get in with the next step. When I phoned up about my surgery as I hadn't had a date I was told that oh sorry we didn't realise you'd finished your chemo I'll put you on the list! And now this. I was going to test Tuesday and Wednesday. I googled how long after covid can you have surgery and it said elective procedures is 7 weeks. I just thought that meant anything that's planned! Thanks again for replying and hope you're well. Xx

About the gap from treatment to surgery, my own surgeon would not touch a patient unless they are at least 4 weeks past treatment, and she much prefers the patient to be past the 6 weeks mark prior to surgery. I have had two mastectomies with her, and the second one was done nearly 7 weeks after my last chemo.
