Hi - is it standard practice to have a bone density scan before starting Letrozole. I had a lumpectomy, lymph node clearance last September followed by radiotherapy. I started Letrozole on October and when this was discussed with me was told I would have a bone density scan to give a baseline so the impact of Letrozole could be monitored. I have a 10 yr prescription and suffering badly with side effects - severe joint pain, 10-12 hot flashes a day, numb fingers at night, trouble sleeping etc. So it’s not great and not getting any easier 5 months in but I also have not heard anything more about the bone density scan. I have a call with an oncology nurse in another month but just wondered if I should ask about the scan or just wait ? Appreciate any thoughts.
I started letrozole last August, had my bone scan in January (via GP request) however it's been two months now and I'm still waiting for the results. Scan did not happen earlier because the oncology registrar hadn't updated my notes, it was only at a follow up appointment in December and I asked about a bone scan they realised I hadn't had one! So no comparison of my bone density before the 5 months of letrozole, not happy about that.
Thanks for replying and it does seem to be a lottery as to whether the scan happens when treatment starts! Glad you have had one at last tho frustrating the results take so long. I will definitely start chasing up my GP and the oncology team as have been on Letrozole for 6 months now. Good luck and hope your results are positive.
I started Letrozole in September last year. My consultant asked my GP to organise the DEXA scan, which did take several weeks. I didn't get the results automatically, but had a check-in telephone appointment with my GP and asked about it then. He said it was fine, which is why I hadn't been notified! If your GP is responsible for making the appointment I would call the surgery and ask if they know what is happening. If it's the hospital then contact the breast care nurse.
I couldn't tolerate the side-effects of Letrozole at first - especially the hot flushes at night which resulted in very little sleep. I'm now on Venlafaxine to counteract some of the side effects, and it's definitely reducing the hot flushes. I'm now getting quite severe joint pain in my fingers - they stiffen up overnight and I struggle to make a fist/hold a glass first thing in a morning - but it does wear off pretty quickly. I'm also getting wrist pain at random times.
I hope it gets sorted out!
Diane.
