I was diagnosed just over two weeks ago and have my mastectomy booked in for a week Tuesday. I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis 6 years ago. The last few months this has been under control but the stress and worry of my new diagnosis has caused a flare up. As I nearer the surgery date and follow up treatments, I just wondered if anyone has managed both conditions (breast cancer & IBD) along side each other?
Hi MissMopsy
I have diverticular with some colitis diagnosis approx 20yr ago and followed with resection of colon . Since then it was managed alongside bowel anti inflammatory meds .
Obviously we’re all different with how our bodies react but this is my experience
Diagnosed with BC and Masectomy in July 2019 . At meeting with Onco bowel history looked at and chemo planned changed due to one drug would aggravate bowel .Also bowel meds stopped ( bowel consultant was told ) .
The surprising end result of this was no loose motions . Some constipation ( expected with chemo ) but on the whole a return to normal bowel movement .
Still have not gone back to bowel meds 3yr later .
My advice would be to discuss it fully with Team / Onco they want to make sure things are as comfortable as poss
best wishes
Hi I have ulcerative colitis, I was diagnosed 26 yrs ago, I was also diagnosed with breast cancer last June and have had a lumpectomy, auxiliary node clearance and I finished radiotherapy in January. My colitis is not completely ok but I’ve managed, I think it worried me more having to go in for surgery that it would be ok, but it was fine I didn’t have any problems with it. I ate healthy when I got home so I had no real problems I couldn’t cope with, just make sure you drink plenty of water so you don’t get dehydrated.
Now past surgery and radiotherapy I’m on Letrozole and zoladex injections which make it flare every other week, not that bad that I can’t cope but just that it’s back again. I do know though that if I eat healthy and cut out sugar and lactose that it calms down.
Hope all goes well with your surgery

I have UC in remission and also Bile Acid Malabsorption which is active. Because chemo makes me a bit constipated for a few days after treatment I have had to manage my BAM meds carefully with mixed results. It’s just trial and error and not great for me. I have taken my UC medication as normal throughout. I was worried that the stress of all this would cause a flare but I do know in my case it can come out months or years later. I called my IBD Nurse for advice and she arranged for me to speak to a consultant so you could do this if you can. I actually think the steroids help the UC though.
Wishing you good luck. It’s a lot to take on. IBD is horrible at the best of times but with the stress of chemo it is awful x
