HI

I'm having chemo and then further surgery with radiotherapy planned after that for 4 to 5 weeks. I'm not sure yet when the radiotherapy will fall but I have a family holiday booked in July ( in England) and wonder if the radiotherapy had to be continued every day or whether you can have a  break fir a week in the middle if it falls that way . Does anyone know?

Thanks xx

  • Hi, afaik its4 or 5 continuous weeks, so don't think you can have a break in the middle, but you should check with the oncology team/your BCN.  You should be aware that you may feel exceedingly tired after the radiotherapy for a week or two.  All depends when your surgery is and when they can start RT.  Hope you manage to get your holiday  x

  • Thanks for your reply . All the best to you xx

  • Hi

No you wouldn’t be allowed a weeks break in the middle of your treatment for a holiday as this would change the biological effect of the treatment.

Of course some people have had to take a break for extreme circumstances in which case their dose is recalculated.

Hopefully if you tell your team your plans they can try to work your treatment plan around your holiday….. there is usually a 2 week gap between radiotherapy planning and start of treatment so you may be lucky if the dates fall right but to be honest it’s difficult to plan time scales as there is a covid backlog and waiting times are different in different parts of the country.

I hope you manage to get away x

  • Thanks for your reply. Hopefully the dates will work out xx

  • I have a similar issue! Last chemo is 2nd June, holiday in Belgium 8th July! Spoke to my breast nurse, who was wonderful, and was told 4 weeks was the ideal interval. But my holiday would make the interval 6 weeks, and she said that would probs not be an issue as the wait time was increasing anyway, so always ask, I’m sure it’ll be fine. Best of luck xx

  • Thanks Mazz. Hope it works out for you too. Dont forget to check.with your travel insurance if you are going abroad .

    Xx

  • Yeah, holiday insurance is always a nightmare. Apparently MacMillan have a list of favourable companies! Must remember to ask!  It’s a bit sad really, the insurance companies seem to have a blanket policy for “cancer” when it’s unlikely that we’re all gonna die from it if we’re well enough to go on holiday ThinkingFace palmGrinning

  • I know! My yearly insurance won't let me renew. They say they cant cover me. X

  • Cheeky feckers! I’m just not going to bother, it’s money for old rope. I’d rather put it in a savings account. It’s probably the best odds you’ll get on a gamble! Ha Ha!

  • Yes. You might be better going in England if you haven't already booked. X
