I've had one chemotherapy treatment and due my second on Wednesday. My hair started falling out on Friday in handfuls. I used the cold cap for my first treatment but I'm now thinking I might not have it again. It's not great and I've had lots of headaches. If all my hair is going to fall out should I carry on I know it's personal choice but what choice did you make when it happened to you.

  • Hello Debbie. I used the cold cap and during the first few chemo sessions my hair was shedding a lot but the shedding soon stopped and I carried on with the cold cap (I had 8 chemo sessions). My chemo finished in December and although my hair was a lot thinner (I had thick hair to start with) there were no bald patches and around 50% of my hair was left. I didn't need a wig although I started wearing beaney hats towards the end of my chemo due to the cold weather. It's usual to lose around 50% of hair on average when using the cold cap but the amount lost will vary from person to person, but you may not lose it all. I took a paracetamol before each session (agreed by the nurses)  to prevent headaches and a stretchy cotton headband to protect my forehead and ears from the cold, plus had hot drinks which also helped during the first 15 minutes or so. The cold cap apparently also helps with regrowth and I've now got a really good head of hair although it has gone curly! As you say, it's all down to personal preference but I thought I'd give it a go and am pleased that I did. Hope the rest of your treatment goes ok whatever you decide x

  • Thankyou I think I will persevere I also have a lot of thick hair and it's curly Two hearts
