I'm absolutely furious! Saw GP on Monday (a feat in it's self) Thought I had an infection in my Ladybits, usual symptoms (nasty nif, discharge, tummy and back pain) , swab taken and found to be normal. GP proscribed pessaries. I opened the pharmacy bag and to my horror Estradiol pessories!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My Breast cancer is hormone receptive. Its a good job the surgery is now closed otherwise this female GP would have had pessories for her meal tonight Grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Hi Jacuzzi Jack welcome to the forum. I'm not surprised that you are angry, that's totally out of order of that GP to prescribe that for you without at least having a chat with the breast team to see if a low dose is acceptable or not? What part of Hormone receptive Breast Cancer do they not understand I wonder?

Im assuming  that the said GP may be having these pessaries for breakfast on Monday morning? x

  • I’m very tempted to insert them orally so that GP WILL BE SPITTING GEL for a month reminding her to read the patient’s notes. I’ve sent a complaint to bot the lead clinician and the practice manager. Thanks for giving me a giggle Gail.
    best wishes

  • I love your spirit, but I am also frustrated at hearing of yet another such incident. A similar thing happened to me once. Ever since then, whenever someone reaches for a prescription pad, I ask, "What are you prescribing?" and voice my objections, if any. Then, if I am the one collecting from the pharmacy, I open the bag right before their eyes and check to make sure it contains what it is supposed to contain. Caught more than one mistake that way.

The responsibility is entirely theirs to prescribe and dispense the right items. I monitor solely to save myself hassle, wasted time, and physical pain.

Please let us know what happens next on all fronts.

Goodness no wonder you are angry and well done for spotting such a huge error!
GPs are persona non-grata for me unfortunately, not had a face to face with a GP for 2+ years, not even when I found the breast lump last year, yet they manage to see patients to administer Covid and flu jabs! I had a UTI on two occasions in the weeks between my surgery and radiotherapy, couldn’t see a GP only a phone consultation, the GP couldn’t even focus for the few minutes during that call, told me I had 11 allergies which was completely wrong. I complained to the surgery and was told the error occurred because the GP had 3 screens in front of him and was reading another screen with that patient’s notes while speaking to me!

  • Goodness yes I can totally understand your anger. I was once prescribed medication for a migraine by the gp. I read the leaflet as I always do with new medicine and did not think I should take it. I rang the surgery and they said 'OMG you haven't taken any have you? It could kill you!'

I also had my flu jab a few weeks aftermy lumpectomy and lymph node removal.  The nurse was going to give me the jab the same side as the lymph nodes had been removed. I asked if that was ok and she said 'oh goodness me no. It might not work that side.' Well why had she not checked my notes then?

  • I'm thinking I was on a production line, not much if any, notice taken of information on screen in front of her. The problem arises when you are not feeling well, not necessarily able to safeguard yourself and they can't be bothered.

    Best wishes Jackie

  • My daughter put in complaint to  her (and mine ) GP surgery.  She has chronic contamination OCD and the continuous Covid restrictions have impacted her so badly she's barely left house since July and will not allow anyone in.  You access our surgery via AskmyGP if you can get a slot from 7.30am - usually all gone within 60  -90 minutes.   She outlined her worsening mental health that she couldn't sleep, leave her bed, spiralling depression etc.  she even pur in request she had tried all the non medical sleep things like lavender on pillow, camomile tea, meditation  etc.  She wanted the anti histamines she'd had before that make you sleepy.  GP sent a message via system "have you tried a hot bath" @nd no to prescription.    On what planet does a GP think someone with contamination ocd will sit in a bath of their own  dirty water and think this is acceptable response to  someone clearly struggling badly with mental health issues.

  • I am so sorry to read that the GP surgery is still being so unhelpful. Your daughter has a condition which the past 2 years will presumably not have helped. In light of the increasing number of people suffering from mental health issues (my daughter's friend aged 22 committed suicide last month and we are still all in shock at his passing) you would think tbey would be particularly aware and provide suitable care for their patients. But so many things are being missed. My brother in law was diagnosed with a curable by surgery form of cancer in April 2020.They refused to operate for nearly 5 months by which time a curable cancer became one that needed further ongoing treatment and investigations. He ended up with 2 hernias needing 2 further ops as they appear to have rushed surgery when finally they agreed to allow him into a hospital.

It is so frustrating when you can't get to speak to her GP direct.

I would add that I cannot fault the treatment I received both at the hospital and my GP practice since my BC diagnosis. But there should be consistency of care.I still don't understand why we have gone from 5 or 6 GPs on duty to only 1 at any given time.

  • I'm so sorry about your friends son's suicide.  There is and never has been the help out there.  We've been laying for counsellors since 2015 for my daughter as NHS waiting list so long and her university at the time offered no support Ben though they e been in media a lot due to student suicides.    My daughter after uni post  grad counselling and then worked as client support at young peoples MH counselling service.  All they could offer was limited number of free sessions as contracted by LA, school, uni etc.

I do think some GP in large practices are fighting a system to provide good quality care but are so over subscribed they literally have no time.  We've a planning application locally for another 100 homes, to add to 2 other larger  plots of larger new housing estates.  I read the planning application.  Schools already over subscribed and the 2 new estates built made it worse.  The GP surgery also over subscribed.  There is so little land where I live no room for expansion and they selling off a school playing field to build the houses even though school has no space for more pupils !
