shingles and breast cancer

Hi Anyone else been diagnosed with shingles prior to left breast mastectomy ? Possibly stress induced, breast cancer in same breast 21 years later, biopsy and wide excision surgeries performed but need mastectomy for clearance as cancer invading ductal 'acting like lobular' I've been told.

Apparently cancer diagnosis increases shingles risk by 30% - my pain started internally actually awaiting scans for duodenal scan and put on PPI for presumed gastrointestinal ulcer then the burning agonising skin condition under right breast radiating to my back started. Surgeon diagnosed shingles without rash on ant virals and pain killers. hope it clears up and not left with residual nerve pain before Tuesday's surgery.

  • H, I noticed your post hasn't had a response and it's slipped down the pages as the group is busy.  Hopefully my answer will bump it up for you.  I haven't heard anyone else talking about shingles I must admit, but sorry to hear you are in pain and I hope you are feeling better soon.

  • Hiya Irishgirl16, thanks for support. Anti viral worked but left with residual shingles electrifying pains which come randomly. Have had mastectomy, unresolved seroma, on chemo now, 11 days after had to have laser treatment for a laser tear, now after 2nd chemo had allergic reaction during infusion & no alarm or nurse around was v v scary, since daily development of extravasation or as nurse called it wrong phlebitus where IV cannula badly fitted on wrist so now on antibiotics but chemo continues to burn tissue v worried about necrosis. Replied to you as I'm actually in Ireland, no free healthcare, paying for meds, chemo day ward, operations etc its a nightmare I am British & worked in the NHS you are so lucky there.

  • Oh meant laser surgery for retinal tear...asked if this chemo related as I also have glaucoma...but swiftly denied by oncology.

  • Sorry to hear you're having a tough time right now. I hope the rest of your chemo cycle goes better

  • I got my shingles out of the way a couple of years before my breast cancer Joy My GP got me on anti-virals very quickly, and they stopped the rash in its tracks. What surprised me was how much pain I was in and for how long. It was about 2 months before it all settled down. I was beginning to think it would just be something I was stuck with, then it stopped virtually overnight. Hopefully, your shingles will settle soon - it sounds as if you have enough going on ((((hugs))))

  • Hi

Before my cancer diagnosis I frequently suffer from shingles in my eyes, usually when I’m feeling a bit low & run down.

I have had mastectomy & lymph node clearance beginning of march. I have a wound that has not quite healed & having dressings twice a week for the last 7 weeks. I have had shingles in my eyes for the last 2 weeks & now have shingles on my chest close to my wounds, it is very painful & itchy. But because of all this my chemo cannot start yet. But I am worried about having shingles again whilst having treatment.
I hope other people manage to get relief from this as it is so painful

  • I had shingles following my mastectomy and then 18 months later needed an op on the mastectomy scar and again got shingles, it is stress related I believe, I'd never had them before. I was given anti virals,  I've had no problems since. Hope all is well prior to your surgery.

  • Hi everyone for your support & shared experiences, shingles pain in addition to BC is really awful. Further research has indicated that shingles minus rash ie. Internal shingles is under diagnosed leaving patients in acute pain unnecessarily. Mine comes & goes with electrifying 'zingers' shooting pains out of the blue. Curious to know if anyone whose had shingles has peripheral neuropathy too. Mine started post surgery 21 years ago has got progressively worse & this years 2022 BC surgeries & chemotherapy has exacerbated numbness so I now have no feeling in my left hand, in fact at times my hand locks in position & has a shingles like, pins & needles sensitivity. Anyone else prone to this as all nerve related.
