Morning

I had my first chemotherapy session a week ago, we haven't discussed hair loss and wigs yet. But reading information about hair loss it seems inevitable it's going to happen as I'm having EC. I wouldn't qualify for a free wig, is it best to talk to my chemotherapy team about it or look for myself. I have a fantastic hairdresser and I'm sure she would do everything to help me if I asked her to.

Thankyou Two hearts

  • Not sure why you would not qualify for a free wig. I am no expert on this, but from the information I was given at my hospital I was under the impression that we all do, "thanks" to the cancer diagnosis. I got my free wig while still on full wages from my job, and no one even asked for any financial information, I was just referred, inside the hospital, to the person who does wigs. I have a lovely wig from there, not that I ever used it -- I am more comfortable with the hats I got on eBay, and come summer, if my head still resembles a shiny marble, I plan to go out in "aircondition mode" -- meaning, no head covering at all, which is how I usually go anyway when indoors, whether at home or in the hospital.

If I were you, I would all options. (In the hospital, the person to talk to would be your breast nurse, not the chemo team.)

  • Hi, when I went for my first chemo the oncology nurse mentioned wigs and gave me a form to fill out to get a £90 voucher towards a wig.  I have not done this yet as been cold capping, but since I have started docetaxel it has not been kind to my hair, so is something I am seriously considering now x

  • Yes, I can’t understand why you don’t qualify either. I know in England you get a voucher towards a wig whilst we in Scotland get a prescription to use at any wig supplier. My wig cost £380 picked up by NHS Scotland. I was gobsmacked when I saw the price on it when I took it home - I didn’t even like it but lady insisted it was ‘perfect’, I was a redhead she gave me blonde!! I know you can get much less expensive wigs as I’ve bought another. I wear hats at home but wear my wig when out as it makes me feel more ‘normal’.
I had 3x EC followed by 3x Docetaxol. I didn’t cold cap as oncologist said it wouldn’t work!!
Best wishes on your journey. X

  • I'm having 3 EC and 3 Docetaxol as well followed by radiotherapy. I had the cold cap for the first treatment but considering not having it anymore as having EC has a high % of your hair falling out. I'm going to ring breast team today as wigs and what's available hasn't been discussed yet and from other posts I've read people have had information about wigs etc from the beginning

    Thankyou Two hearts

  • Yes good idea, I also got a free wig, I had to go to a particular place but they were excellent, you should qualify for a wig or a voucher towards one x
