Got to the hospital Wednesday morning everything went really well and as expected. Had EC chemo drugs and used cold cap. Got home felt ok had a cup of tea and biscuits. About an hour or so later started to go clammy and sweaty felt sick and stomach ache. The pain in my abdomen got a lot worse sweat was pouring out of me and I was shaking and pain unbearable had to ring for an ambulance which didn't come for an hour. The ambulance crew did all usual checks ecg ok temperature ok advised me to take metoclopramide tablet for sickness. They rang the hospital and told them about chemotherapy emergency card so I could go straight to a ward as now immunocompromised. Got me on the ambulance administered pain relief through cannula about 20 minutes later I started to shake quite a lot and temperature went down to 35 they wrapped me in lots of blankets to keep warm. We got to the hospital and there were no beds I had to wait over 2 hours in the ambulance while the head paramedic went in and out to see what other pain relief I could have and explain I was an urgent chemotherapy patient. They had to give me morphine while we waited. I eventually got took to a&e dept the standard of care was appauling not offered water still had sick bag from ambulance they didn't change cannula plaster coming as it was coming off and it was hanging out. I was quite frightened. I had to continually ask several times for everything the doctor that came was really rude and did nothing. Then a lady doctor came put painkillers drip on and oxygen as sats now low. I was left there until 7 o'clock the next morning before I was moved upstairs to amu (acute medical unit) the experience there was fantastic the staff were wonderful and couldn't do enough for me to make sure I was comfortable and pain free and checked all vitals then fetched me tea and toast. My oncologist isn't sure why it happened he says it's not usual so I'm having a meeting with him and my breast cancer team before my next treatment. Got home Thursday night had a but of sickness since and tiredness but feel ok otherwise. Has anyone else had any similar experience after treatment
Helllo Tanpep2, sorry to hear what has happened, it must have been really frightening for you. It sounds like you may well have had an allergic reaction to EC. You mentioned in an earlier post that you had a headache and your head felt really heavy after the cold cap but a headache is also a potential sign of an allergic reaction to EC, as well as stomach pain and shivering. I don't know if your hospital gave you information about possible side effects but you might find the link below helpful as it explains that allergic reactions can happen at the time of receiving the chemo but can also occur a few hours later. It's good that your oncologist will be reviewing the situation before your next session and willl hopefuily come up with a solution, perhaps a dose reduction, change of chemo or something different. Hope the rest of your treatment goes well x
Hi Tanpep2, I also ended up in hospital after my first FEC with a migraine. I was in for 11 days before they got on top of it. Oncologist thought maybe it was the Dexamethasone so only had the IV dex at my second chemo. Still ended up in A&E having IV and oral morphine. Saw Reg prior to 3rd session and didn't have the dex, but also my Epirubicin was reduced by 25% and no GCSF. No headaches but it does mean I may have to change the taxane as docetaxel requires LOTS of dexamethasone. May be worth asking your oncologist if it could be the dex, if you had that. X
