So I've been told I need chemo which is starting in 10 days time and have opted to try cold cap.
I'm told my hair will be wet and I will need to use a mild conditioner on it for the the treatment. What conditioner do people use? How do you care for your hair during chemo and cold cap to help protect it?
I have very long hair which is right down my back but will be cutting it shorter to give it the best chance of surviving the treatment. My choice but a difficult one which I am gutted about.
Also can I wear my specs while using a cap? I might like to read or watch a film during the treatment but would wearing them cause any problems with the cap fitting properly?
Any advice or experiences would be very much appreciated please.....
Not done cold cap myself, but I had a lady opposite me at chemo yesterday and she was wearing her glasses with one. Sorry you find yourself here, you must be devastated about losing your hair. I have quite long thick hair too and considered cold cap, but heard conflicting stories about it’s effectiveness, as I’m sure you have, and coupled with the extra +2 hours or so added to treatment time, I decided against it, I’ve stocked up on wigs instead, which are quite convincing . Anyway I hope it works well for you, it’s obviously very effective for lots of people who are willing to make the effort, or why would it be offered. Best of luck with your onward journey x
Hi LovinLife
I had my 1st round of Chemo 10 days ago & used the cold cap. I had shoulder length hair but decided to have it cut to a shorter bob just in case!!
They slightly damp your hair and put a small amount of conditioner on so that when the rubber hat comes off it doesn't pull your hair. It was totally fine, cold but I really didn't find it too bad at all.
I wore my glasses and watched TV so all good. I was told to use simple shampoo and only wash hair with luke warm water twice a week, which is hard as I usually do it daily! So looking like I use bryll cream at the moment very greasy..lol
Like you I'm just going to give it a go & see what happens, nothing to lose. (Well except hair!) Good luck on your journey x
Hey. I decided to go for the cold cap, had my first chemo (FEC-T) on 15th December and it took 17 days for my first hair to fall out. This happened when brushing. After my next hair wash my hair was really tangled and I brushed loads of it out. I will mention though, I had long hair which I planned to cut short before starting chemotherapy but got chest infection and couldn’t go… I believe if my hair was short, more would have survived.
after that, I got my husband to cut the remaining hair short and I’ve been wearing wide headbands since to cover the balding patches. I had my third (and last) FEC-T last week and I’m changing to docetaxil for my next three. So far I still have some hair left but it’s getting harder to cover the bald patches up. I will carry on with the cold cap as it should promote faster hair growth. So I’m hoping :) Glasses are ok with the cap.
I use Simple shampoo, wash hair every 4-5 days. Let me know if you have any other questions on it and very best luck with it all xx
