Prosthesis optiobs

Having been turned down for mastectomy with flap reconstruction due to being over 60 and having a higher risk of rejecting an implant due to previous radiotherapy I am having a straightforward masectomy which brings me to the point of this chat.

I am totally confused as to which prosthesis to opt for, opinions and experiences of ladies who have already had their mastectomy and used a prosthesis would be appreciated .  I was also wondering if it would be worthwhile buying a prosthesis specifically for swumming in addition to one provided post op.

  • Hey 2TR. Sorry to hear you need the op & can’t have your preference. I had a mastectomy 4 weeks ago & have limited experience but happy to share. The post mastectomy bras are comfy & soft. My hospital provided me with one and a softie prosthetic. This is okay initially & I have my nhs prosthetic fitting in a few weeks. I wanted a better look though while waiting & I’ve bought a more structured bra from Bra Sisters & one of their Boost forms. I’m so impressed with how good this looks. I can see the Boost should work well in a sports bra or bathing suit going forward. It is a great product & I’m very glad I treated myself to one.  I have also read that if your bathing suit has a good cup, a shower scrunchie can work well. I will probably try this before buying anything more proper. As I’ve managed so far with getting a good look with the Boost & Bra Sisters bra, I’m going to wait & see how I get on with the nhs one before considering anything fancier or higher tech. Good luck with the op xxx

  •  My success story is on my profile .nearly three year of treatment

Hi after approx six weeks after MX I received a NHS prosethic to replace softie . I was unsure but was unhappy with softie keep coming up to chin for chat lol

initial I wore it with a M&S post op bra . I was surprised at how heavy it felt in hands but once in bra and on it felt perfectly normal as in don’t know it’s there . It’s three year in July and Clarissa as I Named the prosethic is just part of my routine .
when I went for fitting at hospital the advice was to take a bra that you were happy with shape given to show fitter . Also a white button thru top as this shows you shape you will show . Do not judge with no clothes on it’s different and isn’t how it looks to others .
I now buy non pocket bras ,a lot more reasonable price range and more styles , I then sew in bra pockets which you can buy on line .
This works well for me as not much choice in larger cups (g)

Just to add from day one nobody has been able to tell which boob is which . In conversations most believe reconstruction but that is something that I never wanted ( too old to be bothered with more surgery ) .

Hope all goes well for you any questions just ask

One step at a time and ...Breathe !

  • Hi

I had a mastectomy last year and have four prosthetics.  My breast nurse gave me a softie after the op which is comfortable and light.  It does need washing however so I requested another from Knitted Knockers UK, which is similar (but prettier!).  KKUK also sent me an aqua knocker which is stuffed with non-absorbent material (like shower scrunchie material) for swimming and exercise.  KKUK provide knitted knockers free in UK.

After my scar and swelling settled down the NHS arranged a fitting for a proper silicone prosthetic.  This is the most realistic looking under clingy clothes.  It can be used inside a swimsuit for swimming etc.

I wear all of mine, partly depending on what I’m doing and what clothes/bra I’m wearing.  The silicone prosthetic is surprisingly heavy, even for my small (B) cup size, and if I wear a really comfy, loose bra it tends to try and slip out beneath!  The softies have the advantage that they can squish up really small to get them inside the insert pocket of ‘normal’ bras.  But they sometimes ride up if your bra doesn’t keep them in place.  Best of luck with your op!
